My pipes are frozen!

Because having a raccoon living in my house wasn't enough adventure, today I wake up and have no running water! Yay!

I suspect frozen pipes. It got super cold last night, but this is the first time it's affected our water. I'm honestly hoping that my landlord just forgot to pay the bill again. That seems like an easier problem to deal with.

Maybe the raccoon came back and figured out how to turn off the water, just to mess with your head. They're smart little buggers.

In that case I'd make sure the brakes on your car haven't been tampered with as well. They're smart little buggers who hold grudges.

I ended up calling the city, and apparently there were a couple water main breaks throughout the city. It's possible that my pipes are fine and that the water has simply been shut off (which would explain why every single faucet in my house isn't working at all). I am waiting to hear back from them to see if that is indeed the problem.

Yes, if every faucet is dry, then it's most likely the water main problems you mentioned. It's possible that the line coming into your house is frozen, but that's less likely. Regardless, watch for any sign of leaking pipes and make sure you know how to turn the water off if you see any. If they are frozen, they may have split open and you could have a lot of damage when they thaw out and start spraying water.

I was skeptical of them being frozen because we've suffered through far colder days without any kind of problem. The city has shut off the water mains before, so it wouldn't be unusual for that to be the issue, but usually they leave a note hanging on the door to give us a heads up.

I was going to suggest somebody clean them, and that maybe everything would then sort itself out.

We're a community of perverts, we are.

I go into work a couple days ago after being off for a day. I go in and start getting things set-up for the day including setting up the three-compartment sink system (wash, rinse, sanitizer) the sanitizer is supposed to be a cool/tepid temperature water so I turn on the "cold" spigot and nothing comes out of the supply tube from the sanitizer lines. I look over at my co-worker and ask him what's wrong with the sink.

He sort of shrugs and says he doesn't know, it didn't work the day before either and he and the other guy just assumed the cold water lines of the building were frozen. Now we have had some very cold temperatures around here lately and our water lines ARE in or near the ceiling of the building which is fairly thin. On cold days the cold tap water is very, very, cold and on hot days in the summer the cold water runs more tepid to down-right warm.

But this didn't add up to me. Mostly because the hot water worked perfectly so *obviously* the water lines worked since they were feeding water into the water heaters.

I look at him askance at first and say, "Really?" and I study the sink a bit, trying both faucets and all of the valves and sure-enough no cold water. But it jsut didn't seem "right."

So I look under the sink and see the problem.

Somehow, someway, the cold-water supply had been shut-off at the main-pipe feeding into the sink. So I turn it on and, sure enough, then the cold water runs perfectly.

I sort of look at him with "one of those" looks and tell him what was wrong.

Him - "Boy, do I feel dumb."
Me - "Yeah."

That happened to me a few weeks ago. There were several reports of water main breaks in my area and when I came home from work one day and didn't have any running water, I suspected that was the case. It took a few hours (don't know how long it actually was since I was away when my local main went down), but gradually it came back.

Still no water, and I still haven't heard from anybody to confirm or deny the water main theory. "They go home at 3," said the lady on the phone, "but we'll get a hold of you sometime tonight."

It's now 10pm, so I don't think anybody is going to call. If water hasn't been restored, I will be going to the gym in the morning to bathe. Good thing I have these two days off work. Hopefully I'll get this all straightened out tomorrow.

So it turns out that my pipes were, indeed, frozen. But it was just the main pipe that actually comes into the house from underground. A guy from the water department showed up this morning and replaced my water meter and basically told me to try and warm up the area as best I could.

I don't own a hairdryer or anything, so I set up a space heater and made a little fort around the pipe to keep the heat in. Within 10 minutes, I had water trickling out of the faucet. 10 minutes after that, all of my faucets were working again with full water pressure.

And the best part, at least so far, is that I can't find any leaks! I think my pipes survived the frost!

Dude 40s are coming next week so hopefully you'll be in the clear.
