My pipes are frozen!

I know. I'm so excited for it.

I've lived in this house for 3 years and survived the cold so far. We've even had way colder temps earlier this winter, and we never had anything freeze. I'm not sure what changed to cause the problem now, but I'm happy for it to be over.

But it still only February. A few days of 40s doesn't mean anything. We're not out of the woods yet.

I don't know if it is the same issue, but here in Minnesota some homes are having the same problem. Its been so cold for so long the frost line has gone down past the usual 4 foot depth to about 6 feet.

I think I have enough snow (2 feet) to insulate against the frost BUT I've had a space heater in my utility room the past few weeks.

That is certainly a possibility. My basement is super old and not very well insulated. I'm actually surprised I haven't had problems until now.

Many years ago (1996, maybe), we had very cold winter followed by a surprise week of thunderstorms. The ground was frozen solid, and the soil couldn't absorb the rain. So it went into our basement. We woke up that morning and found that our basement had collected over 7 ft of water. Ruined everything.

Luckily, I was only 10 years old and still had to go to school. My poor parents were the ones who had to deal with it.

It's been 16 years since that flood, and my mom still can't sleep well whenever it rains. They now have FOUR sump pumps and an ejector pump in "the pit" where the water comes up.
