Yeah, what's missing in the game are trickster NPCs who have such a good AI to counter the brute force of the DPSers and strip tanks of their resistance. Then Science players had their place.

We'll see what happens with SCI when they bring in the kit revamp in Season 9, and the second skill revamp later on in the year that Geko mentioned on Priority One podcast.

Unfortunately I don't think changes to player skill will have major impact on bridge officer abilities. At best we are talking about sci abilities dishing out 100-200 more damage or draining 2-3 more subsystem power.

As for the kit revamp, I heard the focus is on improving kits that are equipped by very few players, such as the few engineer kits that comes with combat supply. So far I have not heard about any plans to change science kits. Anyway, ground science abilities are already pretty good. Its the space abilities that need improving.

Downloaded the game last night, had been curious for some time but I wasn't sure if my PC would run it. Turns out it does! This seems like my kind of MMO, zipping around outside Spacedock and exploring different systems is a whole lot of fun in itself, currently doing the first couple of missions. Could anyone tell me how you buy and upgrade your ship? I was able to change from a Miranda class to a Centaur for nothing, as it was the same type of ship, but you seem to need ingame currency to get a ship from a different category. As I'm using F2P does that affect it in any way?

basically, don't worry too much about it at the beginning. You get pretty rapid promotions at first, and will be changing ships often, so not worth paying for a better one. You should collect enough resources through the missions to buy the next tier of ships at first, or might have to grind a little credit or Dilithium maybe, but should come easy enough. Don't spend much extra on ships until you get into the upper levels, you'll never fly anything below that again once you get there.

You have a free ship at every Promotion up to rear amiral and one free ship costume change.
For those you get tokens that replace the regular currency.
For more ships you need to collect dilithium.
Though nobodoy actually buys dilithium ships.
At endgame you can either buy new ships from the c-store for Zen, which are in essence real world money but but can be exchanged for in game dilithium with other players, or buy a mirror universe ship on the EC exchange, which is the cheapest option, but not the best ships.
Other methods include a range fleet refit ships for fleet credits, dilithium and upgrade modules (Zen or EC).
And last but not least more exotic lockbox ships, which depend on a lot of money in a high risk gamble or very expensively on the EC Exchange.

Don't bother with those until you are at endgame and settled in fir good.
The ship you get for free at level 40 is good enough for all PvE endgame.
Try to use your leveling experience to sample different ship types to find out which you like best.
I recommend science vessel at Lt Commander, Cruiser at Commander and Escort at Captain and then pick the type you liked best for admiral.
Or, if you, like recommended eearlier, play all 3 factions, you can one class and shiptype per faction to get an even better feel fir what you prefer

I have to say, I feel much better about the new executive producer after hearing his interview on the priority one podcast.

He talked about how repeatable events that STO currently have does not always translate to the game being replayable. How that focus on replayability rather than repeatability showed up a little in the new featured episode as random events... sometimes you faced a Voth sniper, other times you faced a Voth mecha. More still need to be done to achieve replayability. A Step Between Stars still feels repeatitive after a couple of playthrus, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

He also talked about his liking of EQ, EQ2 and WoW's quest system where some quests only took 30 minutes but other quests may take 6 hours or even a year (epic quests) to complete, and having appropriate rewards for them. And where there are quests, there is usually a good story to tell. These are something that I felt STO had forgotten about, giving players long term goals to strive for and giving players a story. I am hopeful that season 9 will have some kind of quest system that will give players something to work on for a period of time.

So I made a Romulan character, just to play with the new Romulan Science Destroyer. It seemed a lot more powerful than the Federation counterpart. I don't know why that would be. Possibly it's just a fluke impression. But on top of the fact that it looks more awesome, it also seemed to be more awesome... Might have to play more as a Romulan.

Big DIL bonus weekend starts tomorrow after your regular update time. 50% more DIL on most things, 100% bonus on mining claims.

Since the Fleet needs a big boost of DIL for the project upgrades, recommend everyone try and get some grinding time in! Voth Battlezone already pays out really well, so with a 50% bonus on top of that, that's the place to be to really clean up this weekend!

Considering that in addition to the science ship stuff it comes with the singularity powers as well it probably is more powerful than the federation version.

I hadn't thought of that. You're probably right. Either way, I really like it. Now I just need to grind the rest of the month on the Q-garbage to get it.

I have only just gotten back into the game after a year or so off. What are mining claims?

There are now two dilithium mines in Beta Ursae sector.

There's a fleet owned dilithium mine where fleet members can mine 8? dilithium nodes. The amount of dil mined varies between 1000 to 3000 depending on the tier of the dilithium mine.

Then there's the public mine where captains can mine 3 dilithium nodes each day, giving you around 1000-15000 dilithium. Opening lockboxes will sometimes give you VIP mining claims that allow you to mine a rich dilithium node that can net you around 4000 dilithium.

Why don't we make it a competition? Everyone try and earn as much Dil as you can this weekend. Post your current Dil amount, and when the weekend is over post a screen shot of your final Dil total.

    Easy. 0 Dilithium right now.
Been siphoning the meager amounts I got from my 15 minute play every other fortnight directly toward one or teh other upgrade project anyway.
