That's a fair and reasonable response.
What makes me sad is you always hear news about these people when they screw up.
What about celebrities or singers who are doing good things? Nobody seems to celebrate them.
I pity Justin Bieber in a way. He's on a huge ego trip and it's going to ruin his life. He's following Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. I pray that he doesn't end up dead of an overdose at 19 or 20.

it might be that kids who are successful performers at a young age sooner or later want to be allowed to grow up and reach an older audience. And maybe their managers or record execs want to keep them doing the same thing because it's lucrative, so in order to break away from the young innocent shtick, they feel they have to do something drastic to change their image. Females dress and act provocatively and guys cause or get in trouble. Girls love a bad boy, after all. Not always smart, but they are young and allowed to make some mistakes as long as they only hurt themselves.

I get what she's saying, though. I feel this stuff should be relegated to gossip rags anyway, and shouldn't make the regular news. I'm okay with a news story about, say, George Clooney donating a million dollars to an organization to save kids with diabetes, or something like that (which would be awesome, BTW), since that could have an impact on me, but gossip about celebrities being a part of the mainstream "legitimate" newsfeed? No excuse for that aside from pathetic baiting, and it's a shame it works so well.
People form their opinions based on what they read in the newsmedia. All this does is confirm for them that we're all going down in a pit of flame. Positive news might make for more positive people, and we could save the negativity for actual disasters. Just my two bits.
What I want to know is how he caused $20000 worth of damage egging a house.

Celebrities being assholes is one thing, but drunk driving is an incredibly selfish, vile thing to do and I think he should be called out on it, especially since he's so famous. If they wave this away because of his fame then it sends a pretty powerful message that drunk driving doesn't have much in the way of consequences.

I don't think that there's a danger of people reading that as the message. If Bieber gets off, the message would be that drunk driving doesn't have much in the way of consequences, if you're rich and famous. That's not a good message either, and Bieber's behavior surely sets a bad example regardless, but people expect double standards.
What would be good would be for the message to get out that drunk driving is serious enough that there are no double standards.

I mean, a DUI is a DUI. I'm sure consequences vary state by state. I know quite a few people who have had them, and if it's only their first offense, the penalties really aren't that dire. Fines...temporarily suspended license, but even that's not a guaranteed punishment.

Parents worried about kids listening to Joplin and Hendrix, too. As for Bieber, I'll ridicule him happily. However, he's young and got a lot of money. I'll give him credit for not going fantastically off the rails, same fro Britney Spears, too. I was bad enough at that age, with that kind of money it would have been an ugly mess the Betty Ford clinic would have said we can't do anything.
I think that people who are capable of successful expressions of art* are often very in touch with creativity and chaos, and that, you either know how to ride that whirlwind, or it rides you. The younger these kids (actors, musicians, etc) are, the less likely they are to know how to be the rider, and then you add the money and resources of celebrity, and the whirlwind can become a hurricane of crazy, destructive and self-destructive behavior.
*However one feels about Bieber or his music, there is no denying that he has been successful, and that his work is art. Just maybe not really good art that will ever be considered classical or anything.
