Putting aside the usual knee-jerk Justin Beiber hate (for his music, not his antics), in what way has he not earned his fame, compared to how other teen pop idols have risen to prominence over the decades? It's not like he's some talentless hack thrust into the spotlight who can't hold a tune or give his target audience a performance they enjoy. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because you aren't that target audience (which is fine; neither am I) that he hasn't worked hard and earned his fame as many have done before.
That's the thing that's always gotten to me - even before he started behaving badly, people had kneejerk reactions of hatred whenever he was in the news. And yet, 35 years ago, those same people were going gaga (no, not Gaga

) over Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett and the Bay City Rollers (during the three months when it was kind of cool to like the Bay City Rollers, though I do have a friend who is still a fan).
My reaction has always been: we middle-aged old farts are not his target audience. I may be the oldest non-parent, and the only person posting in this thread, who has actually been to a Bieber concert (no, I didn't lose a bet - a friend had an extra ticket and it seemed silly to let it go to waste, so I went with my friend), so I can say with some authority that the 8-to-14-year-old girls, who
are his target audience, got exactly the experience they wanted and enjoyed it immensely. Who are we to say that this is in any way a bad thing?
Me? I'm willing to admire his showmanship, but I found the music cookie-cutter and uninteresting.
What I want to know is how he caused $20000 worth of damage egging a house.
They were Faberge eggs.
...and he's not even of legal drinking age!
Sure, but he's Canadian, he's of legal drinking age in the country in which he was raised.
Well, different provinces have different drinking ages, but he grew up in Stratford, Ontario, and our drinking age is 19. But that doesn't really matter - anyone is still subject to the laws in the jurisdiction they're currently in. So if the drinking age in Florida is 21, then he shouldn't have been drinking. (Though I won't come down too heavily on him for that, since I'm pretty sure I had my first alcoholic drink in a bar when I was 15 or 16...)
Some of the blame has to go to the enablers he's surrounded himself with, though I do have to wonder where Drake has been through all this. He's been part of Bieber's circle since Bieber was discovered, and he went through the whole teenage celebrity thing (he started out on Degrassi: The Next Generation when he was 15), and seems to have turned out okay. You'd think he'd have smacked Bieber upside the head a few times by now.
