It's going to be a bit surreal to see these characters back on the Big Screen™ again after all these years.

Didn't Fisher already come out with pretty much the same revelation a while back, but her publicist squelched it or something?

So would this finally be considered an official confirmation?
What is the longest period between when an actor first played a character, and their last appearance as that character?

There were about 18 years between "Unification (TNG)" and Star Trek VI and ST:2009. This will be a 32-year gap when Episode VII finally hits theaters.

The Hustler (1961) and The Color of Money (1986): 25 years

ROTJ (1983) and Episode VII (2015): 32 years

It does make for an interesting trivia question ... any other nominations for the largest gap between screen appearances? It'd be neat to compile a list.

    1. Ford/Hamill/Fisher (SW): 32 years
    2. Newman (Hustler/CoM): 25 years
    3. Nimoy(ST): 18 years

Keir Dullea's appearances as Dave Bowman in 2001 and 2010: The Year We Make Contact happened sixteen years apart (1968-84).

Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken - 15 years between movies. True fact, when the sequel was announced he still had the original costume and it still fit.

We should also add Anthony Daniels and Ian McDiarmid: RotJ (1983) and TPM (1999), also 16 years.

    2. Newman (Hustler/CoM): 25 years

If we don't count his role as the Klingon commander of the cruiser squadron destroyed by V'Ger in ST:TMP, there were 17 years between "Journey to Babel (TOS)" and TSFS, the first time Mark Lenard appeared in the flesh on-screen as Sarek since the second season of the original series.

That works, since the criteria is limited to actors playing the same role as previous.

eta: hmmm, what's the biggest gap for Lugosi as Dracula? or Christopher Lee?

doubleoh would probably be able to confirm the exact dates, but didn't almost 20 years pass between the original CBS Dallas going off the air and the new TNT version premiering? The late Larry Hagman played J.R. Ewing in both.

    Edit: Wiki'ed it. 21 years.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Holy frak! Has that been twenty years already?

    Dear lord...

    1. Ford/Hamill/Fisher (SW): 32 years
    2. Newman (Hustler/CoM): 25 years
    3. Hagman (Dallas): 21 years
    4. Carry/Daniels (D&D): 20 years
    5. Ford (IJ): 19 years
    6. Lenard (ST): 18 years
    7. Nimoy (ST): 18 years
    8. Dullea (2001/2010): 16 years
    9. Daniels/McDiarmid (SW): 16 years
    10. Russel (Escape from NY/LA): 15 years

ETA: Did we want to add voice actors? Because both Frank Welker and Peter Cullen reprised their Transformers roles as Megatron and Optimus Prime (respectively) 20 years later. Though, the characters weren't direct continuations, but rather "reboots" (for lack of a better term).

So, at this point, with one exception, the Star Wars Big Three™ are reprising their roles more than a decade later than anyone else has.

    Damn.
