Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

To an old-timer like me, this doesn't feel like 2003-2004 or even 1997-1998. This feels like 1981-1982. That's the last time we were anticipating a Star Wars sequel. As exciting as the wait for each of the Prequels was, the story being told was pretty much a foregone conclusion. This is a lot more like the wait between ESB and ROTJ, because the story could literally go anywhere.

I agree with you on this. It feels A LOT more like having watched ESB and wondering just what's going to happen to these characters. After ROTJ people expected/hoped for a sequel trilogy and instead it was a prequel.

There was wanting to know where the characters go not things that transpired to get them where we already watched them.

It's completely open at this point. Anything can happen and there will be much complaining when it does, but it still brings a sense of excitement and interest in knowing what it will be.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Good point. I guess it's more like the early eighties, only my memory of set/script leaks and spoilers back then are minimal at best.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Or, in the case of Spock's death in TWOK, a local newspaper leak that spoiled the ending before I got to see it. It didn't ruin my enjoyment of the film at age seven or eight, but I didn't go into the cinema thinking Spock would make it through the film scot-free.

Fun times.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Spock dying in TWOK was one of the worst kept secrets in motion picture history.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Did Time magazine spoil Darth Vader being Luke's father? I can't remember anymore.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Could you imagine if TWOK were made today? Spock's death would probably get leaked to AintItCoolNews or E! Online before the first page of the first draft of the shooting script was completed.

They'd have to change the ending just to preserve some level of surprise and mystery by the time the film hit cinemas.

Yep, just like the 80s and definitely not the 00s ... those message boards in the 80s were radical. ;)

You weren't there for WalkieTalkie 1.0, dude. You have no idea how awesome it was to stand behind a bush and spread movie rumors to someone 100 feet away. ;)

Dunno, but Glut's novelization hit the shelves before the film was released, and that sure as hell spoiled it. Someone spilled the beans to me on the telephone, in the name of expressing how confused he was after reading it. :scream: :sigh: Kids!

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Thankfully I didn't know about Vader being Luke's father until I saw the movie for the first time, but I can imagine how that early spoiler might have pissed a whole lot of people off and utterly confused even more.

Had the media term "trolling" existed in the spring of 1980 a lot of moviegoers would have thought the rumored Vader-Luke connection was a form of it.

I did have a pair of Campbell's soup cans and a three foot length of twine ... does that count? :techman:

So did the comic adaptation. I had read the whole thing before I saw the film. I think I even told other kids about various stuff in it. My only defense is that my brain was still growing.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

ROTJ was actually the first SW movie I saw (I was very young and my older sisters and/or parents watched it a lot), so I knew going into ESB and ANH that Vader was Luke's father.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Oddly enough, I didn't see the original movie when it was new back in the summer of 1977. I was just two and a half at the time and my parents weren't entirely sure about this new sci-fi film they'd been seeing all over the place, so I think they just decided to wait.
