For me the definite version is the one from the 70s starring Michael York, Olver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Raquel Welch (damn! ) and Charlton Heston. Unfotunately i'm in Germany so i can't see it.. can't be worse than the Matrix type remake two years ago or the Disney version from the 90s.
Agreed, for me as well the definitive is the 70's (1974) one starring who you mentioned. But whilst it wasn't as good as that version I did enjoy it more than some of the more recent versions. In some respects it felt more in keeping with the style of the 70's version. But then again being a BBC adaptation I would expect nothing less as costume drama's for lack of a better term is one thing the BBC is supposidly good at.
The 70s movie is the best, but... The Musketeers was great for a Sunday night TV show. I didn't know how it'd be, based on the ads and Radio Times articles - looked like a couple of male models and a couple of guys who looked like the belonged more in a sitcom, so I didn't expect much acting - but it turned out great. Nice grimy historical fun, good performances all round (Capaldi and Hugo Speer stealing it), great fights, good music score... I'd put it on a par with Ripper Street for Sunday night viewing, so let's hope it doesn't suffer the same fate.
Very enjoyable. I spaced for a second and thought that FPAlpha was talking about the Disney Animated Three Musketeers staring Mickey, Donald and Goofy. Mini series or Onging? Although the BBC has a habit of producing three episode seasons from time to ####ing time. I wonder how many series Capaldi can headline before Cardiff gets off it's ####ing bum?
I thought it was really enjoable, full of character and wit and excitement. Really puts Atlantis into perspective! I thought all four Musketeers were exceptionally well cast, although the fact Porthos seems to have Idris Elba's voice is a little jarring
I've recorded it but not watched it yet. I was afraid it was going to be another Robin Hood/Merlin/Atlantis affair, none of which I've liked. I was hoping the 9PM Sunday slot would mean otherwise and the above comments look promising. I'll post again once I've seen it !
Ten episodes, and a further ten commissioned for next season. One - the writers said they had to get a new villain for season 2 cos Capaldi has a better job now that they're about to start shooting!
Haven't they already started to film DW as well. But the BBC must be fairly con fident to have commisioned a secon series. As for the first episode overnight figures give it 7.4m http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/jan/20/call-the-midwife-bbc1 I suspect once the final figure is in it'll be around the 8-8.2m mark.
It beats the shit out of all of those. It's more in the Da Vinci's Demons vein, but with way less swearing, nudity, and outrageous anachronisms. TBH it'd get away with an 8pm slot, same as Atlantis would get away with a 6pm one.
It was great fun. The cast was entirely enjoyable and all were used to good effect. I have hope for this show.
Not sure about Merlin, sure it was in a similar vein to Robin Hood and Atlantis but somehow it rose above both of them (a lot of which was down to the cast I know). I still haven't been bothered to watch the last two episodes of Atlantis...and I'm not sure I will now.
I thought it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed all three of the Musketeers, and d'Artagnan as well. Excellent casting. Though it's a shame that Peter Capaldi won't be able to return as Richelieu (for obvious reasons). Looking forward to the next episode.

I liked it unlike Robin Hood and Merlin, after those two I never bothered with Atlantis. Nothing beats Errol Flynn's Adventures of Robin Hood, Excalibur and Michael York, Oliver Reed etc Musketeers. However the BBC Musketeers was miles better than their usual naff stuff.
Of course a cross over would be superb. There was a Hartnell look-a-like roaming around France in 1572. http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Abbot_of_Amboise But classically the story is set in 1625. Cast David Bradley as Abbott? The real Abbot died in 1516, unless there was a less historically significant person with the same title that followed him.
