What happened to the NEw essentialists?

WesleysDisciple

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
did they get discredited and wind up dissolving after their attack on Risa.

or did they stick wiht their guns.

Could see them reprsenting a problem even after the war, as they believed the people of the federation were overly spoiled and self indulgent.

They probably fizzled out after the war when people stopped being afraid.

Let's put it this way. If you can't talk people out of their creature comforts on the grounds that it might make the planet uninhabitable in hundreds of years, do you think you can do it over a threat that doesn't exist anymore?

Depends. I think they had a point in that the Federation was a bit complacent. Even Picard needed Q to see this, since up until then they were not seriously challenged for much of the 24th century.

Even still, the moral values of the Federation are abudance and comfort. Values that the New Essentialists as largely human should know Earth developed in the pre-Federation era. ;)

They were definitely correct that the Federation had grown complacent, but they were incorrect to link that with abundance. The moral values of the Federation are exploration, peace and scientific progress, and those happen to lead to a state of comfort and abundance.

So the conclusion to be drawn from that should not be "Comfort is bad, destroy it", the conclusion should be "Make sure you never get the false impression that you are invincible."

^ But the point was, even in times of war, the Federation can afford to be indulgent. Meaning: Having planets like Risa available for shore leave is not evidence that the Federation is lazy or decadent, it means that people can be trusted to go there, do what they like, and yet not turn soft.

Indeed, it can be argued that wartime is when places like Risa are MOST badly needed - as a release, a way to let off steam and reduce stress. Because if you don't have that, the stress will tear you apart.

^ I'm sure there are. Risa is the most popular tourist attraction in the Federation, after all. If it excluded families, or even just those who wanted a more 'normal' experience, they wouldn't be that popular.

It is probably divided like how some resorts have Adults only sections and family friendly sections.

ENT has mentioned Risa a few times. Even then, it's said that Risa has lots of beaches, mountain climbing, famous restaurants, etc. Plenty of things for families to enjoy together.

Any ideas where Familys go on vacation?

I'm GUESSING they do NOT go to Risa?

Or maybe given that this is the 24th century people aren't just as buttoned up as we're used to and people don't try to shield their children from the fact that grown-ups happen to have sex. Just like they did on the Edo pleasure planet.

After all, we don't really have the same "moral values" people had back in the year 1660, so I suppose they won't have the same moral standards in 2370 as we do have know.

The exception would of course be the New Essentialists who want to go back to the stiff 21st century ways. :p

Or we only see the adult section, or the entire planet is adults only.

But then Picard's book got wet by some children running past, so perhaps Risiians at least think children are capable of comprehending sexuality.
