Honestly TOS you could randomize in any order and watch without missing much if anything. :p

The two pilots and the early first season are really the only ones that need to be viewed in production order.

I prefer to watch it order they were originally released. So I alternate eps of TNG and DS9 when they were concurrent, and watch the movies in between the DS9 eps they were released. Enterprise after all the classic series and movies. I know it's a prequel, but there are sequel elements in there, and I just like it better in that order. JJ movies last.

The 'Ultimate Guides' I posted earlier didn't include any of the movies, but, if you want to watch them in conjunction with what I posted above, they ought to be watched in the following fashion:
Star Trek the Motion Picture, The Wrath of Kahn, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier, and The Undiscovered Country following All Our Yesterdays
Star Trek Generations following DS9 Season 3's Meridian
Star Trek Insurrection following DS9 Season 7's Covenant
Star Trek Nemesis following DS9 Season 7's What You Leave Behind

Also, here's my 'Ultimate Guide' for ENT::
    Season 1:
    Season 2:

    Season 3:

    Season 4:
ENT is the series that needed the least amount of adjustment, as I ended up only making 3 changes to how things were originally produced and aired. Silent Enemy and Cold Front were flip-flopped (because Cold Front takes place after SE), and I moved A Night in Sickbay (which was produced between Minefield and Dead Stop and aired immediately after Dead Stop) to before either of those episodes because it made the 'flow' work better.

I've run across a quandary that I want people's opinions on. In the episode order that I posted earlier for Voyager, I put Day of Honor and Nemesis in Production Order, but after having watched both, I find myself wondering if I ought not to have once again tried to 'second-guess' the Voyager PTBs and left the two eps in their original Airing Order because putting them in Production Order means that you go from Seven 'officially' joining the crew in The Gift to Nemesis - where she doesn't appear - to Day of Honor, where we see her trying to reach out and participate in ship functions by asking for a duty assignment.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that and I think things flow well either way, but was wondering what others thought, so "Should Day of Honor and Nemesis be watched in the order they were aired, or in the order in which they were produced?"

With the exception of TNG's first two seasons, the producers intentionally released episodes in airdate orders so I think that's the preferred way to go. Otherwise you end up with crazy stuff like part 2 of a couple 2 parters coming first.

For TOS, they were just desperate to finish the post production of any episode they could so very little thought went into the order they were aired.

^ With only a few exceptions, Production Order has thus far worked just as well as (and in some cases better than) Original Airing Order with Voyager, which is why I wasn't sure about revising my reccommended viewing order for DoH and Nemesis to put them back in Original Viewing Order.

I came across and read through this entire thread when deciding what order to watch Star Trek in. Since it is still one of the top results in search engines, will post my opinion, which differs from others above.

I suggest starting with Enterprise and going through the series chronologically, not based on production time. The reason is that new viewers have an opportunity that wasn't available to prior viewers, and the chance for a new perspective. It's been mentioned several times here that one should watch the series in order they were made, because otherwise one would miss out on references, but in actuality the references are still going to be noticed, just in the opposite direction. So instead of catching a reference while watching ENT from TNG, if one starts with ENT, she will catch it when watching TNG.

Next, it is plainly not necessary to watch all of the episodes, especially ENT and voyager, which (in my opinion) are the 2 worst series, and even there are episodes in TNG and DS9 which should be skipped (eg, TNG episode with all recaps from previous episodes). There are many lists online that ppl have come up with, with episodes worth watching. These lists differ from each other, so you will have to use some trial and error. I erred on the side of watching more episodes but quickly determined whose taste was similar to my own.

There are a number of mentions of TOS being dated, but I have not found this to be the case; I am still in the process of watching it, but find a number of them highly entertaining. Certainly the special effects are not going to be the same as the other series (maybe this is what is being referred to), but there is good character development. stories, etc, and of course references to and from TOS.
