What's Roddenberry's problem with HAIR?

xvicente

First he cast Shatner. Not only he is bald under the toupee, but in the several instances (enough to turn it into a meme) he appeared shirtless, he had to sport a shaved chest.

Then he got fucking Miss India and ordered her shaved. The fact that's another 40-year anecdote in the movie history tells how weird was that.

Then Stewart. That's really too much to be a coincidence.

Why else would he wear it?

Anyway, not to dignify something so silly, but Roddenberry didn't want Stewart, he wanted "Full head of hair to this day" Stephen Macht. :)

Shaving men's chest hair was pretty common on TV back then for some reason.

Lorne Greene wore a toupee on Bonanza too.

So three unrelated incidents equals a problem?

As Melakon pointed out, toupees and shaved chests were common at the time TOS was filmed.

The real hair problem was Roddenberry originally wanted the men to have futuristic hairstyles. The actors rebelled at this and the compromise was pointed sideburns.

Those pointed sideburns are hot. Literally the first time I ever paid attention to man-hair was the pointed sideburns. If someone came up to me with pointed sideburns I probably wouldn't notice but would respond subconsciously by upping my perception of their hotness

Futuristic hair cuts eh? The people who think TOS is too cheesy would have had a field day with that. Any idea what he wanted them to look like?

And it was the hottest thing ever and the best thing about that movie, which is why I'm so glad (fun fact) that Roddenberry was secretly a "Grey." His species was repulsed by our primitive habit of allowing dead cells to hang off our bodies and provide incubation for all forms of mites and vermin. You heard it here first.

Though his decision to cast William Shatner instead of Yul Brynner in the role of Kirk is admittedly puzzling on this theory, as I'm pretty sure Bill still had hair when he was first cast. But I'm sure we can resolve that.

Why is Sisko not in this thread.

Spotted another baldie! srsly Roddenberry was dead by DS9 and rumor is that's Brooks' idea -- BUT no one stopped him.

Then they recruited Picardo.

Brooks is also a Grey. Picardo, too. All Greys.

In fact you should pretty much just assume that all bald people are secretly Greys.

(I'm blowing the lid off a major Trek secret here, as I'm pretty sure all the people involved have been secretly programmed to think they're human, to have memories of childhood and adolescene and male-pattern baldness and so on. But, nope. Greys.)

Also, didn't Roddenberry originally want Stewart to wear a toupee but overruled by Paramount execs?

Hey, how do you think I feel? It means my cool uncle was a Grey too... which admittedly explains why he was always trying to "probe" me*. But the facts are the facts... ;)

(* Disclaimer: This is an outrageous lie committed for purposes of comedy only. My uncle was a perfect decently fellow and never tried to "probe" me**.)

(** Still, he was bald, so: Grey. Grey as the day is long. There's no denying it.)

But do you.. morph? Or were you always a Grey and it is gradually revealed?

Don't you know that RODNEY MCKAY my number one het lust is RECEDING?!

It's a... grey area with the hybrids. That's one of the thorny points of the Grey Marriage Debate.*

Yep. Grey. Real humans never go bald, I read it on WikiPedia.

[* GROAN. I'll just say it before the gallery does...]

The shining thread in this educational discussion is that 99% of women get to NOT be aliens.

And I will take Rodney regardless. I'm open minded. Experimental, even.
