Well they've still got a week or so left, before the US debt celling is reached.

The problem is that the closer it gets the more nervous the markets get.

I love this thread so much.

Rather than change a tax system, would it not be better to close the loopholes?

No matter what system you use or however many loopholes you close. People will always try and pay the minimum ampount of tax they have to by law. Yes it can be annoying when someone uses a loophole to avoid paying tax but is that their fault of the fault of those who draft the tax laws?

Those that draft the tax laws make the loop-holes.

I'd rather take them out of the picture.

If you're going to take from elsewhere, the least you could do is credit the writer. It's pretty awful not to do that.

I just hope they come to a solution soon...

Actually being obstinate is how Presidents like Reagan came to be regarded as great. Sticking to his principles is exactly what the President should be doing. We elected him to do that. Those of us who agree with the President standing up to the Republicans in general and the Tea Party in particular should show our support.

He certainly has mine on this issue. He needs to stand firm on this.

Same here. While Obama is clearly no Lyndon Johnson who will strongarm the opposition into silence or even reluctant compliance (and has never possessed those ruthless kinds of political skills) he's also not a wilting flower. He can stand firm, and he should. A lot more than just his image as the good guy and the adult in the room are at stake here, and those other things are a lot more important.

Re: Ok Trekkers, Don't Forget To Sign Up For Mandatory Obamacare Oct 1

But your mind is made up... Obama gave us the ACA, and the voters want more goodies.

I'm for the Affordable Care Act, expansions of Food Stamps, Unemployment and Education spending. The wife makes a decent living and we have health insurance (good health insurance).

What 'goodies' am I wanting exactly?

Who knows.

Hope you can keep it.

"Who knows" ?

You're the one who mentioned voters wanting more "goodies." What did you mean by that term?

Well, it's the standard FAQ page.

I DID provide it earlier in the thread.

Let's be honest what a loophole is. A loophole isn't a loophole, it's a tax deduction. In fact, it's a tax deduction that was deliberately created with the hope that people use it. The mortgage interest deduction is designed to encourage you to buy a home. If you buy a home and then deduct interest payments on your mortgage, you aren't finding a loophole. Most loopholes are tax credits and tax deductions.

So, you agree that Obama shouldn't negotiate. OK.

My take is that Boehner needs to stand his ground. This will come back to haunt the President and Harry Reid.

Everyone blames Republicans for everything under the sun anyways.

"Who knows" ?

You're the one who mentioned voters wanting more "goodies." What did you mean by that term?

More entitlements. More dependency on government...

Of, never mind. Read my siggy.

They're not even his schemes. Those paragraphs are copied and pasted, without attribution, from this page at fairtax.org.

You've posted five out of the last eight posts in the span of nine minutes, all of them one liners and drive bys, some of them consecutive. Multi-quote is not freakin' rocket science.

Infraction for spamming. Comments to PM.

You're the one who made the statement that voters want more 'goodies'. I'm a voter. What 'goodies' am I wanting? Or are you simply talking out of your rear, again?

Much like Fox News and Conservative radio.

You seem to have plenty of one-line opinions but little in the way of facts backing them up.

Much like Fox News and Conservative radio.

I'm sensing a trend...

Well the alws of proability say that is a possibility. Though how likely that is is a different matter.

If a clean bill had been presented to the House and rejected, he could have possible have said to the people of the USA, if it had been rejected.

"Mister President, My fellow Americans, I unfortunatly could not garner the votes neeeded to pass the bill, both sides will need to work togther to find a mutually beneficial resolution."

It is one thing to lose a vote, it is entirely another matter for it to be not even presented. The former is democracy at work, the later not so much.

The Democrats already negotiated, and didn't get shit in return. Why should they continue to give concessions to the Republicans when they clearly have no idea what the word compromise means?

Obama already negotiated. The GOP is going back on those negotiations yet again.

Well you are the one who opposes how the Constitution says tax policy should be determined.
