Why did Carol need to change?

Tiberius Jim

Vice Admiral

My wife and I were recounting STiD tonight and she brought up something I hadn't noticed when we watched the film, either of the 3 times I saw it. There was all of this controversy about Carol getting half naked in front of Kirk in preparation to test the fancy torpedoes. I had no problem with it as Star Trek has always featured gratuitous use of skimpy clothes on women. What my wife brought up though was...why did she need to change out of her duty uniform to put on the field/flight suit?

As we can see from the little triangular windows on the shoulders, the suit is worn over your duty uniform, thus the department color can be seen. So if all that needs to be done is put it on over your uniform, why change at all? And further more, if she put the suit over herself with nothing under but her skivvies, why aren't we just seeing skin through those windows rather than (as I seem to remember) the blue of her tunic?

I know I'm bringing this oh-so controversial topic up again, but I'm curious as to whether we missed something (something about her uniform that wouldn't allow the suit to be worn over it, etc.) that would explain it. Because now that I think of it, without a real reason for her getting undressed the scene really is quite silly and unnecessary.

Carol needed to change because the trailer needed to show skin.

The main question should be - "why did the CHARACTER of Carol need to change" (from the one seen in TWOK). There was certain wisdom and maturity about the Carol played by Bebe Besch. Sure, the Alice Eve version was younger and less experienced, but that doesn't make up for the fact that she acted like a whiny brat, and that, well, Alice Eve can't act for shit.

The TWOK one was a middle-aged woman who raised alone a boy, that one, not.

Original Carol: We don't know anything about Carol Marcu other than she dated Kirk at some point and get pregnant and told Kirk to beat bricks. For all we know nuCarol isn't that far off from what the original was like at that age.

Plus: Alternate timeline. Events are going to be different and people are going to be different. It's best not to worry with trying to figure out to make a 1:1 match

Was Carol wearing the miniskirt uniform before or the unisex one?
I can't remember.
Depending on that a change might have been necessary even if she just wanted to wear the grey suit over a regular uniform.

She was wearing the one piece skirt.
Wearing the flight suit over that doesn't look that wise or comfortable to me. It would all ride up around her waist.

I wish this scene was 2 minutes, covered from multiple angles, instead of 2 seconds. At least then it would be worth all the fuss we've seen the last few months.

Carol getting half naked in front of Kirk.

She asked him to turn around, ie. avert his eyes.

And I thought the scene was funny, and setting up the characters' possible future while commenting on both of them as individuals.

And yeah, you can't wear a miniskirt under a flightsuit.

Well yes, she wasn't literally right in front of him. Seems like she could have just as easily asked him to step out of the shuttle while she changed...but that's beside the point because I didn't so much have a problem with that. I was mostly trying to remember if there was anything about what she was wearing that would necessitate a wardrobe change. I suppose she could have put a unisex blue tunic on off camera before donning the flight suit.

Sure, but since when have Star Trek fans been so prudish?

Characters getting dressed and undressed on camera, and wearing clothes that appear to be very strategically placed, have been a staple of Trek since Vina danced for Pike.

I'd also like to see some of the mature Carol, the Galaxy renowned scientist, the girl who called PrimeKirk on his bull$%. Someone who could give Spock a run for his money scientifically speaking.
nuCarol to PrimeCarol in like TOSZeframCochrane to TNGZeframCochrane. Nothing alike in any way.

Just because I didn't want to see every major female character in their underwear doesn't mean I'm a prude. Well I am a prude but not because of that.
When I see every male character in their underwear (I'm talking mainly Karl Urban here) then it might be OK - or it will be ENT

From all the fake outrage, you'd think they had her on a stripper poll and doing lap dances in the shuttle.

There is no indication that she could give Spock a run for his money in The Wrath of Khan. Plus, I question how in control of the Genesis project she actually was since David was able to use Protomatter right under her nose.

You're right. The Abramsverse version actually seems competent.

Those aren't windows, they are coloured patches. The uniform is not under the flight suit. At least not the coloured shirt. I would guess the black undershirt is, but for some reason Carol chose not to wear that.

No, he's right. The windows are clear and allow the duty uniform division color to be seen underneath. In high resolution shots you can even see the seam of the duty uniform.

There are some shots here.

I'm not so sure. If you scroll down to the picture of Quinto, you see the uniform blue in the window yet he has it unzipped and there is just black undershirt under the flight suit.

Yep.

Transforms a planet from dull rock to cool multi eco-systems in 24 hours or something like that. OK perhaps not a total success but that was that David guys fault.

Since she was head of the project, it was her fault.

Just when the hell did that ever happen?

Genesis Project. TWOK.

And she can cook. Can Spock do that?
She had an entire team working with her. Spock pulls scientific miracles out of his hat a moments notice.
