    Sounds a lot like religion.

    Indeed it does.

I got into Star Trek when I was five. The reason I got into it was because of cool spaceships and action scenes. Sometimes it'll have a message squirreled away somewhere in an episode, most times it doesn't.

So I tend to not give big screen Trek that wants to emulate that formula too much shit.

Yeah, Trek fandom should hold themselves to higher standards.

If Orci had said, "Hey, the old series Khan went from a Mexican playing an Asian to a Mexican playing a Caucasian so we felt like we had some racial liberty" or "Hey, we just went for the best actor period," I'd have 0 problem. But in his attempt to be PC, his quote suggests white actors should be given Asian roles instead of Asian actors just because it's the villain and that (depending on if he meant the first personal plural "us" or "U.S.") the villain must be white to make him seem like he's one of the audience or the villain must be white to make him seem like he could be from the United States. It's a quote so clearly trying to be like, "Hey, I support people of color, guys!" but just comes across as offensive to everyone.

It would be nice if you wouldn't just assume that everyone has read the quotes you keep attributing to him and actually provided a source, please. I'm still waiting on the last one where he allegedly insulted the guy's lifestyle, as well. It's hard to rebut or agree with a point if you don't know the context, and since I read the argument in question and didn't see anything like that, I find the assertion that he said that rather dubious.

ETA: Your doppelganger conveniently dropped by to save the day with the quote, so never mind on the Khan one. Though that quote is not even remotely embarrassing or outlandish like you depicted it to be.

Also, while we don't warn for insulting celebrities who are not forum members, can you please cut it out with the constant "cunt" an "twat" type insults toward Orci? I get that it doesn't carry quite the same weight in Britain as it does here in the States, but it creates a hostile environment for posters here (especially female posters) who don't want to have to wade through a bunch of crass comments.

You said people in the industry who are paid for their work should "shut the fuck up" (in all caps, no less). You reiterate the point above, albeit more nicely. How is that functionally any different from telling someone to fuck off, since if he shuts up he can't communicate his thoughts on the forum/comment section and he would essentially be fucking off.

And again, who appointed you arbiter or what professional writers and celebrities are allowed to comment on? They like to have fun and mingle with the fans to, and sometimes that means getting exposed to the bad aspects of fandom along with the good. In which case they're only human and are entitled to have the same reasons as anyone else from time to time.

I'm still waiting for Harve Bennett to explain why he made Khan white in Star Trek II.

If it isn't against the rules, then I shall not stop swearing. Even if it might offend girls (????????).

I'm not critiquing the change at all, just Orci's bizarre quote.

I really think you're reading things that you want to be there. I don't see racism, I see a fear that putting someone of Middle Eastern descent into the role of a terrorist may not be a great thing in the current political/cultural climate and may not be a good thing for the movie.

Just wow. When you think someone has gone as low as they can go, they surprise you!

No wonder no one takes you seriously.

Dude, you'd support Orci even if he denied the holocaust. We've been through this. Though I guess somebody must be there to protect these millionaire public figures from legitimate criticism from geeks in fringe corners of the internet. How would Abrams cope without you, eh?

    You're absolutely right!

How dare he make a comment about casting a character that doesn't match up whatever shit you make up in your head at any given moment.

(And if you had said that to my face, I would've knocked you the fuck out.) :techman:

I love how proud you are of being an unthinking ape :). You go ahead and threaten more violence, chimpy. It's clear it's the only thing your mind is capable of understanding. You're only giving the image of the anti-intellectual Abrams gushers more credence.

Yup. It's obvious he's trying to just be right-on political correct but he unintentionally implies Star Trek is just for white audiences. It's a beautiful disaster of a quote. God forbid somebody with brown skin should go and enjoy the movie?

I don't see how that follows from the quote.
