New idea for a Trek series: "STAR TREK, SECTION 31"

True for Worf. Not true for the Defiant.

From http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/The_Search,_Part_I_(episode)

Of the creation of the USS Defiant, Robert Hewitt Wolfe points out, "Bringing in the Defiant was based on our own internal perceptions of something that would make the show better. It was not based on ratings." There was also a practical reason, as Ira Steven Behr explains, "We'd created villains who were that powerful, and all we had floating around as the thin red line of defense against this possible invading army were three runabouts." (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion)

... a change appealled to the masses.

No, it didn't. Ratings slid for the entirety of its run, the ratings slide was the reason for bringing in the Defiant then Worf.

That's what I've always heard. The turning point for me personally in DS 9 was when Avery Brooks shaved his head and grew the goatee. :techman:

Agree with you on that - same as when they changed the uniforms slightly for TNG season 3, thats when that got really good too

How dare you present those "facts" that run against people's preconceived notions. It doesn't work like that around here! ;)

To say least, dub. Just where do you think you are? ;)

Seriously, dub, Thanks for the info. Facts are always good to have. :techman:

Their reasoning makes no sense.

We're gearing up for war so we will bring in one starship that has a crew of forty to defeat the alien invaders.

I stand by my previous statement. I'll have to see if I can locate the article that it comes from.

I think DS9 would have been significantly better if they had made four/five Defiant-class ships. It would have been more interesting with a fleet, and more plausible in-universe for Starfleet to assign more then one ship to the front-lines of a war...

If they had went that route I would have preferred a small fleet of different class ships for variety.

An excellent idea. It just makes way more sense in-universe to have a fleet as opposed to one ship...

A premise for a series that might fit better with Trek's general philosophy would be to have Section 31 as the antagonist and have the protagonist be a group of captains, admirals, members of Starfleet Intelligence, and others that actively opposes Section 31 and seeks to reveal the wicked machinations of the organization to the greater public. If that wouldn't work, perhaps a tv movie which would show the downfall of Section 31 would work better.

Hmm possibility...But every other power in the Alpha Quadrant has their own version of a CIA of sorts. Romulans Tal Shiar...Cardassians Obsidian Order, even the Klingons. Think of Mission Impossible in the 24th century

Funny, in the Dominion Wars, no one questioned the motives, or integrity of Section 31. Even when they infected Odo with a virus to infect the Founders. Maybe 31 belongs in a glass with the words: In case of severe threat to my Star Fleet job of sitting behind the desk. In case of another Dominion Like race that seeks to conquer or another Borg attack. Then and only then, Break Glass, ignore Prime Directive do what needs to be done

So does the Federation -- it's called Starfleet Intelligence.

Section 31 is not like the CIA. The CIA is authorized and overseen by the democratically-elected Congress, and takes its orders from the democratically-elected President.

Section 31 is an extra-legal conspiracy within the government that answers to no-one. Think less "Section 31" and more "Mafia."

Funny, in the Dominion Wars, no one questioned the motives, or integrity of Section 31.

Bullshit. The episodes they appeared in featured the main characters questioning their motives and integrity all the time.

The CIA takes it's orders from Congress? If you believe that, I got some swampland in Florida I would like to sell you

No I don't think "Mafia" I think more "Current Gov't's of our world:cool:

The CIA takes it's orders from Congress?

No, it takes its orders from the President. Specifically, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency answers to the Director of National Intelligence, who in turn answers to the President.

The CIA is, however, overseen by the Congress -- specifically, by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. And, of course, the CIA needs its funding to be appropriated by Congress every year.

All of which is more than Section 31 can say for itself.

Ok, Ok......After much soul searching and criticism and thinking it over...How about Star Trek "Star Fleet Intelligence"? And Section 31 as the antagonist of the show.

I'll paste what I wrote in post #53 about this idea. :techman:

"I could get into this. Maybe someone in the regular branch of Starfleet Intelligence with a super fast vessel to get from place to place, where ever the current trouble spot was and running into Section 31 agents. Sometimes having to work with them and other times against them."
