New idea for a Trek series: "STAR TREK, SECTION 31"

I still think it would be a great show if done properly - think Homeland, The Wire or any other crime/thriller series but set in the Trek world - come on guys are you serious - you wouldn't like to watch a Trek show done in that fashion?

No. Because it wouldn't be Star Trek, it would a crime/thriller wearing Trek's clothes.

DS9 was almost as big as departure as this...

Bill and I had a similar discussion to this. To him anything not involving a starship exploring space(preferably with Kirk and Spock) isn't Trek.

To me it's just a setting, a backdrop to tell some great stories of the human condition regardless of if they involve a starship or not.

And ratings started to slide. So much so that they added the Defiant then Worf to try and stabilize them.

I feel that if you aren't doing some variation on a starship exploring the galaxy then you're better off starting off with something fresh that isn't handcuffed by nearly fifty-years of history.

It's not that the idea doesn't have some merit. The concept could probably fit an original science fiction series that had nothing to do with Star Trek.

That's the rub for me...

I see lots of good ideas float around this board that people try to shoehorn into the Star Trek universe. I'd much rather see them fleshed out in their own universes where they aren't restricted by Trek's rules.

Two schools of thought here then, I think this is an idea that could be superbly fleshed out within the Trek universe, involving various S31 agents - some good, some bad, some rogue with their own agendas, Starfleet top brass, secret missions, espionage, but involving plenty of other races too, the main character for example could be an Ethan Hunt/Bond/Bourne type of agent who isn't corrupt etc and is one of the good guys - it doesn't have to be dark and depressing it could still show how Star Treks future is a good thing for mankind, but we're not, and never will be perfect - we're not the Borg!

Or it could involve Bashir/O'Brien types who are forced into some Section 31 plot, but while involved they witness or discover something disturbing. Then throughout the series they try to piece together the bigger mystery that 31 is hiding. Then once they piece together most of the info, they try to give that info to a trusted colleague higher up in Starfleet, who is later revealed to be working for 31. Lots of twists and big reveals throughout the series with a series finale that leaves everyone talking. That's what I would enjoy in a series involving 31. :)

Exactly, it could twist, turn and incorporate just about anything you wanted from Trek, all it is is a premise for a series, you could still have your main character(s) going on a mission into the unknown somewhere to complete and objective of some kind, protecting the prime directive etc - hell how many episodes down the years have seen our heroes have to blend (sometimes even be surgically altered) into an alien culture to observe them for example? It could incorporate the best of TOS/TNG and DS9.

After STID highlighting of S31 I think it could be a very interesting way to go, just plonking yet another crew on another starship and have them explore the galaxy has been done to death in my opinion, this would be a way to follow on from these films once they've done the third one, and could be a cutting edge that a new Trek series would need in what's let's face it, a crowded marketplace these days. Think of all the modern day social commentary that could be included - corruption, rendition, spying, a new cold war to explore, and thats just from the Federation side of things - it could be amazing...

A Section 31 show sounds like the emphasis is on a police procedural rather than science fiction to me. And those have been around since Dragnet in the 1950s.

You could argue that most of the other series are soap operas that happen to be set in space. All I'm saying is that if Trek is to return to the small screen where it belongs, then it needs evolve and be different to previous outings, whilst upholding the core principals of what has made it great in the first place. The alien of the week with slightly differing forehead makeup isn't going to cut it any more... been there, done that.

I don't disagree. I just don't think Section 31 is the way to go with this. It could make a good subplot within a show where a sympathetic character gets caught up in it with them and has to test his character and morals, but that's a story about the character more than the organization. That's what's going to keep people tuning in every week, interesting characters and stories more so than the setting or uniform they wear.

I could get into this. Maybe someone in the regular branch of Starfleet Intelligence with a super fast vessel to get from place to place, where ever the current trouble spot was and running into Section 31 agents. Sometimes having to work with them and other times against them.

^I'd watch the best of Starfleet Intelligence trying to bring down Section 31, along with other big hidden baddies, like a Star Trek mystery.

No it wasn't. DS9 was good, but some people go overboard on how "radically different" or "trailblazing" it was from the rest of Trek.

I like this too! See what happens when we put our heads together! :techman:

DS9 WAS a departure, but at least it fit in the Star Trek universe...

It was a needed departure as well. Trek could've ended right there, had they made a third series about essentially the same thing...... a change appealled to the masses.
