‘Superman & Batman’ movie will follow ‘Man of Steel’

I think the claim that Superman Returns had a 270 million budget is false. 60 million or so were spent on the Superman films that never got made.

 

If you recall, it had a huge drop-off in its second weekend, which I think was after the announcement. It's certainly a hit, certainly a bigger hit than SR, but it still fell short of their hopes. Luckily, WB have perhaps taken the view that, like Batman Begins, which was also viewed as not having a massive take, MOS' sequels are likely to prove more profitable.

 

Yes, that is how the figure was computed, by lumping in the money lost previously. It certainly doesn't look like it cost 270 million to make all by itself.

 

I'd say you're misreading the cartoon. It's not saying "Affleck will be a good Batman." It's poking fun at the inconsistency and fickleness of the fans, and the way "fan rage" willfully blinds itself to reasons for optimism or uncertainty.

 

Where did you hear that Keaton's voice was digitally enhanced? This is the first time I've heard something like this. It always sounded like he just lowered his voice to me.

 

^ I think he meant Bale, not Keaton (maybe that was a typo on your part too).

It seemed pretty apparent to me that his voice had some sort of modulation in TDK but I don't think he had it in either of the other movies; definitely not BB anyway.

Bentley certainly has the look. It would have been interesting...

Yeah, Bale's voice in TDK and TDKR definitely sounded electronically altered to me; of course he was doing the growl himself, but it was further enhanced to sound deeper.

 

I'm not disputing that Man of Steel was most likely a disappointment, but Cracked does not do the rigorous fact-checking that you believe they do. Plenty of their articles have huge glaring errors and the one you linked to is no exception. Not only does the writer forget that Hollywood lies about profits for accounting reasons, but he also tried to linearly extrapolate a graph based on 2 data points. That Fantastic Four graph is hilarious.

 

Even though I do like Affleck as Batman, Bentley would have been a good choice too.

Many men can look the part. The question is, do they fit the the role in a way the director wants for the story? That remains to be seen.

I'm pro-Affleck but I would probably have preferred Bentley (who Sony wanted to play Spider-man in Sam Raimi's movie - they allowed Raimi his preferred choice of Toby Maguire) if only because he brings less baggage and doesn't have a 'Wes Bentley persona' the way Affleck has a Ben Affleck one. Though I've a suspicion that the claim about Nolan wanting him arises solely because Bentley has been cast in Nolan's Interstellar.

 

Anyone remember when Robert Downey Jr. was announced to play Tony Stark? Everyone went WTF but a few who knew his previous work said "Just wait.. this could be something".

Now it's impossible to think of Tony Stark and not see RDJ before you.. he just owned the role and made him possibly the most popular movie superhero.

I'm not saying Affleck will enjoy a similar success or be as perfect for the role but he is a good actor and it's worth giving it a shot. They are huge shoes after Bale and the Nolan movies but i'll be cautious to judge before i see the first pictures and scenes.

Edit: Mainly because I think Affleck Looks like Bruce Wayne and from the manips I have seen, looks like Batman in costume. Also I have been impressed by Affleck's recent work (Not saying he is Daniel Day Lewis, but I really feel he has improved). Affleck's emergence as a director/storyteller I believe might be a positive impact on his acting ability.

Not only that, but from the rumors that Affleck is all in the DC/WB universe, this will truly be exciting (Directing JLA/Solo Bat films). We are looking at Affleck taking the baton from Nolan in this regards.

The idea of him playing a directorial/creative role is encouraging, but it's hard to see how he could manage to oversee multiple films behind the camera and play one of the lead roles on-camera as well. He'd pretty much have to give up sleep altogether. Although that could be seen as a good way to become more like Batman...

 

The flip to this of course is that you'd think he had been cast to play Adolf Eichmann in a brutal reconstruction of his life than was to be filmed entirely in German rather than being asked to play a white rich american who dresses up in a rubber bat gimp suit.

 

Well he has done it successfully for his last 2 films, not sure how directing himself really works though

 

I think that Affleck is a fine actor, and he has the right look that most would associate with Bruce Wayne. I am glad that they seem to be going for a new continuity for this version of Batman, rather than a continuation of the Nolan trilogy. I never liked the hyper-realistic portray all that much, even if the movies were entertaining. I'd much rather have a Batman universe in which people like Clayface and Mr. Freeze can exist, just not the super-cheesy Batman & Robin Mr. Freeze. Marvel is doing a good job with the new Spider-Man films, in striking a balance between a more believable portrayal of he characters, but still retaining its inherent scifi elements.

 

But that's different from being the "showrunner" for an entire multi-movie franchise and having supervisory input not only into your own films but into other people's as well. Imagine if Joss Whedon were not only supervising the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe but playing Tony Stark at the same time.

As for actors directing themselves in general, it helps that there are assistant directors. The director will be the one deciding how the scene will play out, but the assistant will presumably handle the mechanics of whatever has to be done behind the camera while the director/star is in front of it.

 

My favorite was the article that claimed that, had only Pvt. Hudson or anyone else seen Old Rose drop the necklace from the boat, they could easily have found and retrieved it. Uh, due to water currents, the impact of such a small object burrowing into sands all on its own, and other sands sweeping over it due to said water currents... no; it'd still be gone forever.
