DS9 was the series that most closely captured the spirit of the original series when it wanted to.

Both nu Trek stories could have been set up by adolescent fan boys playing a Trek RPG in their basement.

Well, after the plot of #4, Indiana Jones is starting to become Indiana the Night Stalker...

Unfortunately, that is exactly the kind of material a studio would place before cameras as it caters to the worst of SW fanwank geekdom (IOW, "ooh! lightsaber fights!").

Yeah, I know, that's why I chose that as an example of a horrible movie. Studio execs often take the wrong message from successful movies. As it was pointed out, maybe by you, that looking at RDJ, as the prime example of why an older superhero works. They believe audiences think, "cool, a charismatic character who's portrayed by a charismatic actor". Yes, that is part of it, but as we've seen, Marvel takes care to be involved with how the character is written. They try to stick to the basic characteristics of Tony Stark. Yes, it may not be a direct correlation from comic book to screen, but they obviously do care what fans think and not just the general audience. Maybe their bottom line is money, but could they make the same money by shiting on the character? Maybe they could, but also you are starting to have inside men that are our age and grew up with this shit as well, so in a weird way, we have representatives within the business, much like we did with Serenity.

If true, I think Cranston would make a very good Lex Luthor. Plus, he's worked with Affleck before (Argo), so hopefully that'll assure the slightly-better-acting Affleck will show up for this film (considering Affleck was fairly good in that film).

I'd prefer to see Cranston as Jim Gordon.

You have a problem with seeing lightsaber fights in Star Wars?

I assume you have the same problem with seeing swordfights in jidai-geki films?

How about phasers in Star Trek?

The problem there is "just needs the material." The issue isn't Affleck; we know he's capable of doing good work in the right circumstances. The issue is Snyder and Goyer and the folks at DC Entertainment making the decisions, and they're the ones I lack confidence in.

^On that note, given that Affleck allegedly turned down the chance to direct MOS and Justice League, as well as saying he never wanted to play a superhero again, I wonder if they gave him a guarantee of creative input or veto in order to secure his agreement. Given that any one of his 3 movies as director are better than any of Snyder's (or Goyer's movies as director, for that matter), I certainly hope so.

I've been reflecting on this and I don't think any of the film actors portraying DC's Batman have been close to my interpretation of him in the books and comics I've read. Burton, Kilmer, Clooney and yes, even the mighty Bale gave interesting interpretations of Batman but never really delivered to me in my mind what Batman was truly all about. So here's another stab at it and I certainly welcome that.

Not a fan of Affleck as he's a difficult character actor to like (comes off as pompous and arrogant in such a way that it's impossible for me to 'root' for him as a protagonist) and Batman (superheroes in general) are usually in a character-driven story so I don't see him besting any before him. It seems impossible, actually. Unless the premise is that he's a bad guy this time around and that would also bring considerable fan backlash, so much that it might solidify Affleck as Evil Bats. But with Justice League coming, probably not.

He will share the title role so maybe there will be a lot more Bats in this film than expected. I'd read rumors that train loads of money were being prepared for Sir Bale to appear for twenty minutes of the film and that didn't smell right.

Plot driven Affleck, yes. He was really enjoyable in Argo. Hype will most certainly build from now until the film's release. Given what's happened this summer with Depp's Tonto, it appears movie audiences are no longer content to actually see a film before deciding if it was a piece of shit or not. And that's a shame.

Some have said that the real choice for Affleck would have been to direct and I agree... but that current mock-up going around of Affleck in the Bat mask is not too bad and piques my interest. This should be really interesting. I wonder how much this will be discussed in next year's The Big Bang Theory... I can hear Sheldon complaining already.

Has this ever been confirmed by Bale's reps anywhere? Because it sounds like the usual fanboy wishful thinking.

I only hope Cavill continues to get first billing in MOS2. I worry that Affleck will be taking it away from him since he is the "bigger" actor. :sigh:

Does Amy Adams ring a bell? She wasn't billed first in MOS.

My gut tells me that Affleck is getting top billing as the bigger name and because Batman is bigger draw at the B.O. than Superman to date.

OTOH, Brando and Hackman got billing over Reeve and that didn't stop Reeve from making the role his own for decades.

This. I really hope we're not up for another Clooney: a talented actor/director who has the chops and look to play the best Batman ever, saddled with a poor script and a director less talented than he is.

I never thought of the Adams point. She'd end up ahead of Affleck if they credited the movie like that!

I think it'll probably be a bit like McQueen and Newman in The Towering Inferno. One will come first but the other name will be more highly placed in the poster and onscreen.
