Spock Prime's Hair (Spoilers)

Son_of_Soong

In the first film Spock Primes' hair is grey and matches his aged appearance, but in Into Darkness when Spock contacts him his hair is pitch black and youthful looking. Has there been an explanation for this rather odd change in appearance?

The only thing I can think of is that the first film focused a lot on the point that Spock Prime was an older version of Spock from another timeline. Since Into Darkness doesn't go into this in detail I can only assume that they tried to make Spock Prime try to resemble the younger Spock as much as possible.

Either that or Spock Prime decided to dye his hair for some reason. Anyone have any ideas?

You've gotta look your best when you're repopulating the species:D

I wonder if maybe what we saw in Into Darkness was Nimoy's real hair (which is that colour still!), or perhaps even CGI.

In 09 it was obviously a wig, not much better than the incredibly bad ones from the TNG era. Nimoy's real hair color isn't as completely gray as that wig was.

In this pic it's either a very good wig, or Nimoy's real hair. I'm guessing it's real.

Well whatever their reason for the change it just looks strange to me after seeing him with the grey hair in the first movie.

I don't understand why they would change his hair colour from this...

Comparing that to photos of Leonard from 2012 and 2013, I'd say it's almost definitely not his real hair as Spock.

I'm going to have to say... wig, lol, still clueless as to why they changed the colour from grey to black tho.

Two words: hair dye.

Why not? Vulcans obviously care about their appearance. Vulcan men shave, and women wear make-up. Hair dye is not different.

how cool...we are talking of spock's hair, LOL.

I think the make up people from Into Darkness just forgot about his grey hair from the 09 film, after all it was a 4 year gap. people forget things.

Speaking of hair, did anyone hate Uhura's awful Mohawk. why put that ugly hairstyle on a pretty girl.

Mohawk? A shaved head with a strip of hair in the middle?

Well, her hair was not a full Mohawk but its like a Mohawk and it was awful.
It's nothing like a Mohawk. It's not even like a fauxhawk. If you want to argue that it was, then don't hijack someone else's topic; start your own thread - with pictures. Or write it in your blog - with pictures.

In this thread: back to the topic of Spock's hair.

Could it just be the lighting? As Trek fans, we all know that lighting can change things.

Yes I'm not convinced by the hazy transmission.
Still it does look blacker.
Call me shallow but I prefer his hair less grey.

Sorry to go off topic but I didn't like Uhura's hair in STV and preferred the 'blacker' hair in STVI.

Yet I thought Pike Greenwood looked dashing with his grey hair.

Maybe I'm used to seeing Uhura and Spock in their younger days.

Agreed... that transmission makes it difficult to make out details. I'll take a closer look on Sept 10 when I can get me some bluray goodness on a 60 inch screen!

In the pic I posted old Spock's hair looks darker, but overall he looks younger anyway. Nimoy may have dyed his hair, or it may just be how his natural color looks when cut and sprayed down.

The main reason I think it's his real hair is the flat spot just over the center of his forehead. If you look at some of the TOS episodes, his hair has the reflection that follows the curve of the bangs, but about half an inch above. In several shots there is the flat spot that does not follow that curve. That's what I saw in the screenshot from the new movie.

Also, look at the cut of the hair at the temples and around the ear. It looks to me like natural hair, and not the type of wig that he wore in the 09 film. When that movie was shot, he was wearing his hair much shorter, almost a crew cut. In candid photos from 2012-13 his hair is much longer. Look at the Audi ad. It's not at all unreasonable for me to think that he let his hair grow out so he wouldn't have to wear the wig.

I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.
