I've been thinking was his death the right thing to happen in the movie. I was thinking would it have been better for pike to save kirk or spocks life but not get killed like in the other trek universe he saved cadets and got injured in the line of duty.

So did you think it was necessary to kill off his character.??

I can understand why they did in some respect Pike was the mentor role to Kirk, and eventually the mentor is no longer needed.

But I'm not sure If I would have killed off Pike maybe confine him to a wheelchair to mirror events somewhat that happened in the Prime Universe.

They had an opportunity to kill him off in 2009 if they'd wanted. I've not seen the film yet (have to wait for dvd), but if it makes sense within the story, then that's all the justification a writer needs. It might also depend whether Bruce Greenwood had signed for 2 or 3 films.

Isn't the thread title something of a spoiler?

Just Japan to go, I think. Another couple of weeks, it'll have opened there, and then everyone will be able to throw spoilers around with relative abandon.

I thought it one of the most realistically acted deaths I've seen.

His death was needed...but I hate to see him go, I loved how Greenwood played him.

I would have killed him, but done it differently.

Have him survive the attack on the conference, then he takes command of the Enterprise, only to sacrifice himself fixing the engine core. Then he stays dead so we don't need that stupid magic blood crap.

It also makes Kirk fight to get command of the Enterprise back because he doesn't just get it handed back to him. Seriously, what was up with that. They made such a bog deal about it in the beginning of the movie, only to throw it all away when it became inconvenient. And it also lets Kirk be the one in the big fight with Khan instead of Spock. What is the logic in having the hero of the piece be in a coma during the climactic fight?

This. It sucks to see Pike die, but it was well-done. Spock's comforting meld was awesome too (even if it did leave me wondering if he'd be carrying around Pike's katra!)

Oh, he did that to be comforting? I thought he just wanted to see what it would be like to meld with someone who was dying.

Maybe they can write him into a flash back scene for the third movie?

Because it simply doesn't work. Even in Space Seed, Khan should've squished Kirk like a bug.

And if they had went that route, many of the people who dislike the film would've went on and on about how Khan should've squished Kirk like a bug.

Exactly this. Plus, in the new universe the writers have set Spock as an equal protagonist to Kirk, which means he gets his own story thread and character growth. So Kirk and Spock absically switch places from the beginning to the end, where Kirk sacrifices himself, and Spock is doing something reckless.

Sad but necessary imo. Pike really got the shaft in this universe but perhaps it won't be in vain if Kirk grows the hell up now, which is what I suspect the motivation for offing Pike.

Btw, perhaps is was mentioned above and I missed it but Pike didn't get killed in the other universe, unless you were referencing some novel or something. He ended up on Talos living a life of illusion. ;)

Then you have Spock come in and save the day. Two against a super one.

I felt real emotion when Pike died, unlike the later scene, partly because I was laughing so hard and partly because they had already alluded to the reset button. They needed to cull him to move the plot and characters forward. Pike's death worked IMO.

Just wished he could have made it to the 3rd movie loved to see him sacrifice himself..... I thought it worked better in Man Of Steel superman lost his foster father and his real father in that movie but I thought the Kevin Costner scene was emotional when he saved his dog and would not let Clark save him to stop him revealing his gifts. I'd loved to seen pike save kirk and kirk realise that he was right all the time !!!

Yeah, my initial feeling was that Pike would assume command of Enterprise and he'd die at the hands of Khan at the midpoint of the film. (Some of the plotting seems to hint that this was an option at one point.)
