The Next Food Network Star?

Is anyone else watching this? I'm always intrigued by this show, but have never been overwhelmed with the winner's show. I'm not sure what to think about the finalists this time around: I can hardly understand the Pie Guy when he talks, so he's out for me. I thought Russel's pilot was good, but I'd never make his food, and Demaris' food looks good, and probably something I'd try to make at home. However, her quirky cuteness seems like it would get annoying pretty quickly.

I must admit that this show is one of my guilty pleasures. My wife and I both watch it. I know nothing about cooking, but I've watched so many of these shows that I can usually spot a mistake that the 'judges' are going to pick on when the time comes. I better stop speaking up about those things or my wife will expect me to start doing some cooking!

As you stated, I've never really cared for the shows that past winners have put out, but the show itself is fun.

The Pie Man is funny, but is hard to understand and is too uneven in his food quality. Damaris does annoy me, but not as much as Nicky Dinky (some name, huh?) did. I think Russell ought to win. If he does win, I might watch one or two of his show's episodes to see how it turns out.

Now, did you ever watch Sweet Genius? The host is an absolute hoot, but my wife won't usually watch that with me. She thinks he's just kind of weird and creepy.

This show and Design Star are actually pretty funny. Except for Guy Fieri and David Bromstad how many of these people have actually had successful television careers?

Regardless, I do find them fun to watch. Occasionally some of the runner ups do end up getting shows as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stacy again and maybe Russell if he doesn't win. With some more polish Damaris would actually be a good replacement for Paula Deen if they wanted to recultivate that southern charm demographic.

I stopped watching because I was underwhelmed by the potential candidates. I really can't stand Giada and even Bobby Flay is becoming grating with his seven thousand shows on Food Network.

We try to watch the reruns to catch up.

The pie guy won't win. Not consistent enough. Is Russell the mohawk guy? I don't think he's a winner either. Stacy has been on before, a couple of years ago. She's good, but I don't think she's good enough. She doesn't connect. I think Demaris could win. I don't know if she can support a show by herself, but I've been surprised before.

I can't stand the Pie Guy. He is a walking cliche and nothing original has come out of his yap over the course of this season. When he and Guy Fieri where on screen together the douchiness level nearly broke my TV.

I'm continually surprised with how much the judges like Demaris. She has a nice enough personality and can seem to cook but doesn't really stand out. I wonder how she made the cut to get on the show to begin with.

I was also amazed at last year's winner. He was completely monotone and expressionless but was constantly praised. He seems to have disappeared though. Do these people actually get TV shows or just one-shot specials?

Edit: Despite my griping, I really enjoy the show. Anyone planning on watching the new Cutthroat Kitchen show that they keep promoting?

The winners usually get about a 6 episode run. If the show doesn't take off in that time they get the boot.

Stacy was previously on Kitchen Impossible to have her restaurant saved, not Food Network Star. The asian guy that got eliminated earlier this season was on Iron Chef as an opponent to Bobby Flay.

Justin Warner's (the winner of Season 8) show has yet to appear. Seventh season winner Jeff Mauro's "Sandwich King" has been on for two seasons.

I enjoy "Sandwich King". Jeff has a great sense of humor, and the most of the stuff he fixes really sounds and looks good.

I saw the end of one the other day and he had taken an oversized bite that he barely managed to shove into his gob (it took more than one application of the fork). I was thinking why they didn't reshoot that and that I thought of Food Network Star and maybe they really do only get one take when they grind these shows out.

I haven't watched any FNS this season though. I'm curious to see "Pie Guy" now...

^^ Think of a bald, fatter, somewhat mumbling version of Guy Fieri with a New York/New Jersey accent.

I stand corrected--but I knew I'd seen her on the network before. My viewing is sporadic at best, but I try to keep up.

Most.

Some of his versions of classics just don't look as good as the originals.

I had never seen this show before until this summer. I started watching about four or five weeks ago. I like the show a lot actually. I know Guy Fierri came from that show and I like triple D, but I can't stand him. I really like Restaurant Impossible and Bobby Flay and Iron Chef a lot too. I really like Demaris, she's not your average star and she's not polished. She's rough around the edges and I like that. I'm from the South, so I also have a bias towards her. I can't stand Stacy, she just comes off as fake as hell. The pie guy and Russel, they just don't have their shit together. I'm also glad that Niki left, she also seemed too fake.

So Demaris won this season (probably not a big spoiler-y thing), which is ok with me. I would have preferred Russell, but I do miss the practical cooking shows on the Food Network, and Demaris was really the only option of the three who would actually cook. Plus they have to fill the southern role that Paula Deen left. Alton Brown has a podcast (the Alton Browncast) and last week's episode was a roundtable interview with the three finalists. Good stuff with a lot of inside details on the show.

Yeah, I was upset that Pie Face made it to #2. He's an idiot. Russell or Demaris winning was fine with me though. Either one could do well with more grooming.
