On the one hand, I'm not terribly surprised BBC appointed another white male, on the other, I'm happy they went with a more mature actor to the role. After two young heartthrob types, it's time for a change of pace.
I enjoyed the praises Capaldi gave some to the fans for keeping the show alive, and it's neat to see he has a lot of enthusiasm for the role. I've seen a couple Youtube clips of Capaldi's Malcolm character, but that's not really enough to give me a solid impression of him, so we'll see.
As soon as I heard about the choice, I Googled his twitter feed to see what the man himself had to say and found a couple of different Capaldi Twtter pages in his name:
One is a very nice, professional update for his acting stuff (and chock full of some rally cool nice praises for his casting, another is....a mite disturbing.
The
second Twitter page, also in Capaldi's name, is from 2011 with only two tweets-both antisemitic. What's the deal?
Edit: It seems Twitter just took it down, as I was writing this reply, so I posted the link to the cached page. Better grab it, quick.
So what's the deal? Anyway, I'll be very interested to learn more about the next Doctor as the details are finalized. My vpte would be for another plain clothes Doctor, letting his character take the center stage, but I'm pretty open about it.
