STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

Not sure that the 50th anniversary is going to be a selling point to ordinary moviegoers... And the fans will go anyway, so...

The 50th anniversary guarantees lots of extra free publicity. Newspapers, magazines, websites and TV shows doing retrospectives. Bookshops doing displays.

The 20th anniversary was a Really Big Deal. ST IV rode it well. And the general public responded.

Well, free publicity can't hurt, and might help, that's true. I was only concerned about the producers of the next movie actually harping on the 50th as a selling point to see the new installment, which could backfire something awful. Let the newspapers, magazines, etc. do the heavy lifting in that particular regard...

They would just be rushing to make another movie just so it could be released during a certain year, not because they actually have any kind of real good story to tell.

Huh? I'm fairly sure Orci & Kurtzman deliberately planted lots of seeds in STiD to ensure they have lots of potential good stories to tell. And the 5YM has just begun for the characters.

In the past, Trek has always avoided opening the same year as a Star Wars movie.

Well, there were only five to avoid after TMP's premiere, and a huge gap between the two trilogies.

BTW, although STiD has now seemingly completed its suburban and IMAX 3D runs in Sydney, Australia, it's still screening twice daily in the city:

It is my understanding that the movie is just making its debut July 5 in Spain. I am not sure what other locations are left after this. Here in my neck of NY state it still showing in the Regal cinemas and then will be shown in the Cinema Saver for some time after that.

I am quite confident that this movie has done very well and that the third movie will be out to coincide with the 50th anniversary.

And to be completely honest, I don't like seeing movies in theatres all that much because it's A) loud B) sometimes in 3D and C) full of people, and I usually don't like being around that many noisy, smelly idiots.
I'm the opposite. I hate seeing a movie when there aren't many people with me in the theater. For me, a big part of actually going to a public place to see a movie on the big screen is to have a shared experience, and without the energy and atmosphere of an excited crowd the experience kind of falls flat; I may as well have been in my room watching a DVD.

I am a little dubious of the Disney's plan to make Star Wars movies each year. It remains to be seen if they actually start developing another SW movie while Abrams is still working on his.

Even if Trek has to face a Star Wars movie in 2016 it will be a spin-off Star Wars movie and not the mainline Abrams version which is supposed to come out in 2015.

Oh, we're talking about the fucking SW spinoffs! Okay, I missed that.

That's just one more summer blockbuster that Trek has to deal with in the scheduling landscape, then. Might as well worry about Transformers.

Yeah, AOTC and Nemesis were both released in 2002, although at different times during the year. They weren't in direct competition. Insurrection and Episode 1: TPM were quite close together in release, although INS was late 1998 and TPM was the following year, in May.

I think going up against a SW film would be financial suicide for Trek. Although I prefer Star Trek and always have, I enjoy SW as well, and acknowledge that Trek just isn't as big a box office draw as its closest rival. SW casts a wider net, and appeals to a larger demographic.

Yes, here in Melbourne as well, STID has finished its theatrical run, but there are still a few sessions screening in selected theatres in the city. I might go catch it for a fifth time in the Palace Nova cinema in town.

I went to a 1:45 pm matinee today and the room (seating about 100-120) was over half full...and judging from the audience reaction, it was mostly a group of first timers, not multiple viewers like me...

Just popping in to say that I saw Into Darkness for the 4th time last week, this time in the United States with Yeoman Randi!:)
How is she? I haven't heard from her in over a year.

I have only seen Star Trek Into Darkness once. Mom's health is shaky... in and out of hospital. Home health is here from 10am-5pm weekdays, so it is difficult to get out for a movie. Blu-rays & DVDs comprise most of my movie experience. I am amazed that someone sees any movie as often as I see here. More power to you! :techman:

I don't think this can be stressed enough: Star Wars is THE franchise and the original blockbuster. Whether you prefer one franchise or the other is irrelevant: SW is a vastly superior product (in that it sells a whole lot more.)

For Star Trek to succeed overseas, it had to become less Star Trek. Star Wars has never had to become less of what it was to succeed overseas. Star Wars succeeds because it's not overly philosophical. Star Wars is about the struggle between the forces of evil and the forces of good, which can be easily understood in any culture.

Indeed, I thought about seeing it for a third time, but just missed a half-price screening. Now it seems to be gone altogether. Oh well, it may float into one of the little cinemas at some stage. Shame it missed the school holidays - it would be nice to draw in some younger fans.
