Tried watching the Spacey version. FU supposedly placed the new Secretary of State by planting a news story. I couldn't believe there wouldn't be more politicos doing exactly the same thing. Nor could I believe that the President/Chief of Staff would pay any attention to the news on this.

Since we're watching this show through Frank's eyes, we have no evidence to support that no other politicos plant news stories or maneuver into jobs.

In fact, we have direct contradictory evidence, as we see the state legislator from South Carolina who tries to sabotage Frank with the whole peach thing so that he can become a US Congressman... luckily, Frank stamps him out.

And regarding the President listening to fake news stories, you better believe politicians are in tune with that sort of thing. Public opinion is a strong force.

Further evidence shows that politicians other than Frank may be maneuvering, because he did not get the SecState job. We don't know what truly caused the President to go in a different direction with his initial pick.

I liked how the series depicts Frank as not always getting his way.

I think I may have missed Frank's motivation. I know at the start of the show, the president breaks his promise to make him Secretary of State, but is that reason for him to go to the extremes he does to "get them"? Sure he's making policy and showing that he is a man that can get things done, but wouldn't he be doing that anyways as WIP? Maybe he is just really vindictive, but to what ends?

Frank feels he deserves more. He's shown that he's successful as Majority Whip, now he is setting his sights higher. Like any rational person, he's just setting the bar higher.

Agreed. To me, whether hero or villain, always getting your way makes for boring TV. Get away with enough that it's uncertain what the future holds? That's a lot more fun!

Indeed, and as he says in the first episode, where he describes his job as sort of grubby and underhanded, and as he put it, he has done his time as chief whip.

I purchased the DVD box set yesterday and did a total binge. I thought the show was pretty good. Not as great as the hype but still very entertaining. I liked Boss better but I can see how House of Cards might have more appeal since its dealing with national politics and is anchored by an even bigger dramatic actor.

Overall I thought the acting was solid across the board. Spacey was great and had some very quotable lines. Robin Wright reminded me of Mika on Morning Joe, at least in terms of her look. And Russo put me in the mind of Congressman Thad McCotter. Kate Mara was also did a great job, though I feel for her Zoe Barnes because I think she's in way over her head.

Looking forward to season 2.

Not sure if I should have started a new thread, but I just watched the first episode of House of Cards tonight. So far it's interesting and I can see why he was nominated. Looking forward to the rest, and to have something to compare "Orange is the New Black" to. This is the second Netflix series I have watched.
