When I was in high school I used to be like the OP, but with the Back to the Future trilogy. No joke. I'd sit down and watch those three movies back-to-back every weekend, without fail. I was obsessed, couldn't get enough of 'em, never got tired of 'em. I think I must have worn clear through those VHS tapes.

By contrast, I think I've only ever watched them maybe twice since I got the DVDs 10+ years ago.

No, this is a fair point. More often that not I have it "on in the background" - or I certainly do that now.

I can't really give a reason why I've seen it so many times except

    a) I'm not kidding
    b) We are talking about a 25 year period.
    b) I've only seen it probably 10 times in the last 3 years or so.
    c) I'm certain that are plenty of people who have seen it more times than me (they are just not reading this thread)
    d) I don't think its that weird.

I'll admit, its a little on the extreme side but 1990-1997 I pretty much watched nothing but Star Trek (lets not forget there was a lot of it about - especially 95 onwards!)

Its only like someone being obsessed with favourite album or song.

I'll often pop a Trek DVD into the tv in my room as I go to bed. I may read awhile with it as background noise, or just roll over and listen to it as I fall asleep. I've been through the movies and DVDs enough times over the years I don't much care if I'm missing something, and the background noise is nice.

I agree with you, there´s nothing weird about it at all. It just shows how special that movie was/is for you, and I think that´s great.

What I DO find weird however, are the topics that were discussed during the course of this thread

I do this a lot, too. For some reason, it's soothing, and it's easy to fall asleep to normal Trek sounds.

Totally agree. No one ever said, "Oh man you've listened to Hotel California HOW many times? 500?! GET A LIFE!"

Mind you I've wanted to say that about music from that era..

But people do spend decades of their lives listening to their same favorite music and this is considered normal.

Well, it's not weird in the sense that A) you're not alone and B) when I was a kid (say around 10-12) I used to watch the same movies 30-40 times over a period of a few weeks or months, and then moved on. I think most kids are like that (maybe).

What's unusual (read: out of the ordinary; it's not pejorative) is that you keep doing it after so much time, and so late in life.

I'm glad you enjoy the movie that much. But I couldn't do that anymore, myself. Too many good movies to see again ! :)

Precisely. Many people don't understand why others watch a movie more than once. To me it's like music, only a bit longer than your usual album: your appreciation of the product changes over time, and you want to go through the whole thing at least once in a while.

It's like coming back to an old friend. Honestly, every time I watch it I see something new.

I certainly watch it a lot less now.

I'm on a bit of a TSFS run at the moment. I've probably only seen that 100-200 times

Clearly you hate Spock to have watched him die 500 times and only bring him back 100-200 times. :p

You know, its true I have killed his death scene for me somewhat now by overwatching it.

If you watch the scene now - there is a cadet swaying in the background which my eye is always drawn to. His "radiation poisoning" acting (if that's what it is) is distracting and bordering on ridiculous.

Holy shit! I never noticed that before. I hope it doesn't distract me the next time I watch the movie.

As it is, I always pay too much attention to the elderly Chinese guy Kirk bumps into when he runs into engineering. In fact, it was only on my most recent viewing that I noticed the guy can also be seen in the torpedo bay during the funeral.

There's also the third person (besides Scotty and McCoy) who tries to hold him back as he's running toward Spock. I don't know who he's supposed to be. He just lowers his shoulder into Kirk's midsection to keep him from moving.

I just figured he's the lowest ranking guy around, and if two senior officers die, he's the one that's gonna get blamed. :p
