I will miss him, he is my favorite of the new series. One of my ideas would be Benedict Cumberbatch but he might be too big and also he does Sherlock. I am not too familiar with English actors so I would be hard press to name someone who isn't world famous.

To me, Bradley James was the better actor of the two; he displayed greater range than Colin Morgan and was able to convey depths to a character that could easily be one-note.

Let's pluck James Marsters from the 90's and give him the role. When he's done with his stint as the Doctor we can send him back.

I still think Hugh Laurie would be fun to see, providing a bit of synchronicity... but he's far too well known for it to ever happen

So instead of kissing his companion he will suck their blood. I like him also.

I ask this all just because of curiosity, but I really hope it does not come across as racist as that is not my intent.

Are there any good black actors who would fit the role? I guess with the recent reports of Doctor Who being racist, they could hit the issue dead on, but it would also be good to branch out and go with someone that doesn't fit the Doctor middle-aged white persona. I know this is such a slippery topic though because it might come across as casting a black guy (or girl) for the legendary role as some sort of statement, but I hope that won't be the case. I just think right now if they really wanted to, they have the opportunity to be different and surprising. It is a risk worth taking.

Isn't that a bit like asking "are there any good black actors"? There is absolutely nothing about the part that requires the "special talents" (whatever they may be) of Whitey to play it.

For that matter there's nothing about the part that requires a man to play it either.

From what I hear, though, something like the Hurt Doctor would probably not have been out of the question for him.

A Time War story with Cumby as the Doctor and Martin Freeman as the Master? Could be insane enough to work. ;)

I don't know any black UK actors, ok. I maybe know Elba, but other than that, I don't know of anyone else. As for the whole good part, I would hope they want someone good to play the role, but who knows. I certainly didn't know who Smith was before he landed the role of the Doctor so anyone can be a pleasant surprise.

Well, this was an odd way of finding out for me. When the first link didn't work, the second was a big headline about politicians* and the third was a link to the Daily Mail (which I didn't click), I thought I'd stumbled into a parody thread. I was very impressed that everyone was keeping the joke running up until page 3 when I thought maybe you were all being a bit too good.

Definitely gonna miss Smith as the Doctor, but fingers crossed that big things happen for him as they have for Karen.

    * I missed the smaller headline lower down.

Gonna miss him, some of his performances have been amazing.

Questions: Has the xmas special been filmed yet? Given he's been seen with shaved head, I'm guessing perhaps yes?

And more importantly, will Clara be departing as well? Would be nice to have a transition companion.

I wonder if Karen Gillan and Arthur Darville regret leaving now. They could well have been the first "entire Doctor" companions and stayed until the bitter end.

No, the Christmas special hasn't been filmed yet. It'll film in August or September, enough time for Smith to grow his hair back after the movie for which he has (presumably) shaved it.

Jenna-Louise Coleman has said she's saying for series eight. But then again, so did Smith, in that recent magazine interview.

I'm just a grumpy old cus I guess, but I really hate the "so-and-so for the new Doctor!" game. Almost every time everyone's wrong and we get an actor that almost nobodies heard of.

And thank you SO much JNT for starting the whole "The next Doctor might be a woman" thing back in 1980.

It'd be funny if he regenerated into Billie Piiper, and then quickly grabs hir own ass... "I ALWAYS wanted to do that!"

^ Funnier if it were John Barrowman. ;)

Or Karen Gillan, natch. But more funny weird than funny ha-ha, maybe.

I'll say it. I'm glad. While I've always liked Matt Smith, I love the building excitement of an impending regeneration, and discovering the new guy (or gal).

I like origin stories. They're cool.
