What do you think about the USS Vengeance ? (spoilers, probably)

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

If they named it Excelcior, I'd wish they didn't crash it. In fact, I wish they hadn't.
I wouldn't put it past them to have de-militarized version of this down the line named Excelsior. It'd be cool.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I don't think they were going for subtlety. :)

Marcus wasn't a subtle man. Plus he was absolute certain that a war was coming with the Klingons--hell he wanted the damn war and was trying to trip it off.

I figured Marcus named the ship "Vengeance" cause in his mind he was going to avenge the Federation.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Well in the movies we've had V'Ger, the whale probe, the Borg cube, the Son'A collector, the Scimitar, the Narada and the Vengeance, all of which were huge, and in almost every mobie the Enterprise takes a beating from something, so it's a recipe that is tired but that works.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

If it's designed to be manned by a minimal crew, why is it so big?

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Starfleet and Section 31 hire Khan to design a super warship.

I have to believe it was already under construction by the time Khan was awakened. It took Starfleet at least three years to build the Enterprise and that doesn't take into account design time.

A lot the hull is probably dedicated to weapons, guess they haven't figured out how to miniaturize the weapon components to make a Defiant class ship. At this rate, will be interesting to see how big the Galaxy Class will be in this timeline.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I haven't seen a topic on this, so here it is.

When I saw the latest trailers in theatres, I thought "Woah ! Big new ship." and then I looked for some pictures on the net. My first reaction was that this was one ugly ship, but then I realised that this was a good thing.

The Vengeance looks like a dark, galactic-empire version of the Enterprise, something only Section 31 could dream up. So it's 'ugly' but awesome, all at once.

What do you guys think ?
FLOP!!!

That's the feeling I got. The 5 year mission seems a big deal, so maybe it started like as a long range exploration ship desig. Nero pops up and shits on everything, and Section 31 grabs the biggest ship they can and starts overclocking that fucker like mad. Khan comes along, and being Khan, starts building HIS flagship on top on what ever Section 31 has already done to the ship.

That's no moon, that's a starship!

Clearly. But still, come on! The bad guy's ship shouldn't be so eary to figure out right away. No one would guess looking at random pictures out of context the Reliant is the ship the Enterprise is fighting in TWOK. Even Imperial Star Destroyers, oversized compared to the hero ships they fight don't look nearly as "Evil" is Vengeance does.
To each their own, but...

Vengeance doesn't even look evil to me. It looks menacing, i.e., powerful/armored/serious business. But evil? Nah. It just looks like a Federation starship built with heavy armor and a combat focus.

The one thing I don't like is the... hole in the middle of the saucer, with the blue light cylinder in the front. Kinda goofy looking. Other than that, I like the design.

Loved that crazy sound it made when it just stormed right up behind the Ent at warp and started laying into it, too - that was unnerving as fuck.

It's basically the Scimitar all over again.
Vengeance doesn't come anywhere near the level of stupid powering the Scimitar.

If it's designed to be manned by a minimal crew, why is it so big?

Overcompensation.
OR... weapons, armor, redundant systems, etc. The ship's size was probably based primarily on those factors; they determined just what kind of overall capabilities they wanted, and then from there worked out how big the space frame needed to be. It also clearly has some kind of new deal going on with its warp drive, so who knows how much bigger the warp core and engineering section might need to be.

So wait, what was the time frame again? If they specified the number of years between the time Khan was defrosted and the beginning of the movie's story, I don't remember what it was.

One year.

Are you sure about that ? I mean, the Vengeance looked like it could reduce Enterprise to puddle in about 30 seconds flat. Only Carol, Scotty and Khan managed to change that fate. Oh, and Spock.

At least 1701-E held its own against the Scimitar for a while.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I like the Vengeance, it served the story concept and complimented the Enterprise like yin and yang - it symbolised what Starfleet shouldn't really be about and then it failed by it's literal nose diving.

All this moaning about the Vengeance is purely sour grapes because the Vengeance is clearly bigger and more dramatic on screen than the TNG era ships that some people get so sentimental about.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

I thought it was silly and puerile, definitely my least favorite aspect of the film.

I was nothing more than a mix of the Scimitar and your run-of-the-mill fanwank. The name "Vengeance" is something one would expect to find in the average fanfic forum. And it looks like something designed by Cryptic.

Hopefully George and Gracie can make a home of it.

Re: What do you think about the USS Vengeance ?

Vengeance is a lot better looking than fugly ships like the Excelsior and Nebula class ships. It's got some character to it's ugliness. Those 2 ships are just plain ass ugly.
