Imagine if the internet existed when the Original trilogy was first released. If so there would have been Shippers. Including Luke/Leia shippers. Just picture the reaction they would have had when it was revealed in ROTJ that they are brother and sister!!!!

Exactly my point. I am sure there really were a small minority of fans angry about that revelation. So nothing has changed, its just now small minorities of fans have public forums to vent.

Imagine the Trek BBS had it existed in May, 1983 when ROTJ first hit theaters. The nerdrage with occasional references to Atari, Ronald Reagan and the band Toto.

Actually, that's not much different from today.
