Thanks. I do try. For some reason.
Also, 60,000 posts! Have I really spa-posted that much over the years?!
Nemesis was the first Trek movie I had ever seen in theaters (I have been a Trek fan since the early 80s but one reason or another kept me from ever seeing them in theaters).
In theaters, it was enjoyable, all of the questions I had were pushed to the background so I could just enjoy the moment. I don't know if that would have worked had I seen Insurrection in theaters prior to that outing.
When my friends and I went and saw Nemesis opening night, there were, maybe, 5 other people in the theater with us. The movie complex itself was packed, but our theater was all quiet and nearly empty. Based on that (entirely anecdotal I know), I'd say Insurrection mortally wounded it, and Nemesis made the killing blow.
Now, that doesn't mean I hate those movies, but they did seem to contribute somewhat to the end of the TNG franchise's popularity in movies.
ST09 did well because we got to see Young Uhura without her clothes on. The Final Frontier didn't do well... because we got to see Old Uhura without her clothes on.
But the 2009 film did well because for the first time in a long time, it made Star Trek fun.
I completely agree. I liked TNG as a TV series, but really disliked the movies, because the tone and pace of TNG just didn't work for a movie format, in my opinion. And to me, it felt like everyone was trying to reinvent their characters in the TNG movies - Picard is suddenly doing action scene after action scene in contrived situations, suddenly being portrayed as a rule-breaker when we had seen him be quite conservative in the TV show, go-karting on a planet in a dune buggy ... Worf is threatening to kill Picard for calling him a coward ... it all pulled me out of the story... I felt like I was watching one of those TV reunion shows, where the actors or writers seem to be creating charicatures of their former character roles, rather than something new... The exciting frontier exploration, adventure, and action feel of the original series was what a movie needed, and when TNG tried to replicate that in their movies, it didn't work...
What sunk the TNG movie franchise: Insurrection or Nemesis?
What sunk the TNG movie franchise: Insurrection or Nemesis?
Neither.. the TNG franchise literally had no where else to go. The Insurrection and Nemesis movies were great on their own...But they just didnt add anything to the franchise that couldnt be seen on one of the hour episodes. ..
Still wouldnt have missed either for the world though. Data wigging out, Commander William Babyface, Will and Deanna finally hooking up (on screen!), Picard driving a Subaru, Data making the ultimate sacrifce...and sweet sweet Anij..
Yes, I also agree.[
I agree that neither INS or NEM are to blame, but TNG had lots of places to go.
I'd say it was a combination of INS and NEM having their problems along with the cast just visibly getting older. Whatever you want to say about NuTrek they are all attractive young people.
I think the ball was dropped with GEN. That was one awkward, strange film that just doesn't sit right no matter how you slice it. And this is from someone who sees a lot of good in GEN. So, you had millions of people watching TNG, which was a character driven sci-fi drama thingy, and the first feature film is half about Kirk, who has nothing to do with TNG, Data plays with his emotion chip, and the ship you've identified the show with for 7 years is sacked.
They didn't do anything with the characters, and de-branded TNG somewhat by crashing the ship. Really, nothing significant happens with the characters until NEM, by which point those millions of people had long since stopped caring. They stopped telling their stories. Should have had the wedding and Data's death in the first film. And just kept giving reasons to care or be interested in these characters while the crazy sci fi thing is happening.

Both. The fact they had two bombs back-to-back plus "Enterprise" disillusioning audiences on television.

That's the real problem with all four of the Next Generation films. None of them break new ground with the characters or the universe. They're simply two hour long episodes with a budget.
