What sunk the TNG movie franchise: Insurrection or Nemesis?

Maybe because "purity" isn't all that important? I mean, when was the last time you heard a crowd pour out of a movie raving about the purity of its high-concept?:)

("You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll admire how cerebral it is!")

And, aside from its debt to "The Changeling," I'm not sure that TMP was more like a typical TOS episode than the other other TOS movies. It all depends on which TOS episodes you want to compare it to.

I don't recall Kirk and Co. soberly encountering a pure scifi concept in every episode. I also remember them clashing with Klingons and Romulans, being captured by insane computers, dabbling in time-travel once or twice a a season, succumbing to strange alien viruses, dealing with interplanetary politics, bumping into Abraham Lincoln and Apollo, and even being overrun with tribbles . . . .

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "pure" TOS episode. Anymore than "The Changeling" is more like TOS than "Balance of Terror" or "Amok Time."

Insurrection was the reason I didn't see Nemesis in the theater, only Trek film I've missed other than the first (I was 8 give me a break...).

I confess I haven't seen any of those yet. :)

I really do need to catch up with "Inception" one of these days . . . .

Nemesis was the first Trek movie I had ever seen in theaters (I have been a Trek fan since the early 80s but one reason or another kept me from ever seeing them in theaters).

In theaters, it was enjoyable, all of the questions I had were pushed to the background so I could just enjoy the moment. I don't know if that would have worked had I seen Insurrection in theaters prior to that outing.

When my friends and I went and saw Nemesis opening night, there were, maybe, 5 other people in the theater with us. The movie complex itself was packed, but our theater was all quiet and nearly empty. Based on that (entirely anecdotal I know), I'd say Insurrection mortally wounded it, and Nemesis made the killing blow.

Now, that doesn't mean I hate those movies, but they did seem to contribute somewhat to the end of the TNG franchise's popularity in movies.

So, after the first movie you went to see they killed the franchise. I blame you.

Yes. We seem to be a lot alike.

Also, regarding Nemesis, it probably didn't help that what few people came in, my friend, who was with me and was an usher for that theater, would yell out "NO ONE EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!" every time a Romulan Warbird would decloak.
