That said, I can't resist ending the post by laughing at the fact that Star Trek 2009 has been accused of having emotion. Spock was the second worst character after Uhura in that movie, and was probably the worst actor, too. His story had about as much emotion as any of bay's movies.

I'd be interested to hear what films or Star Treks moved you, and which actors from it you consider talented. I somehow doubt we'll agree.

Exactly. This whole group are so willing to point out what's wrong with Abrams Trek how it isn't real Star Trek, but none have yet to offer an alternative. They never suggest how they'd make it better or how action Trek film of old differs from nuTrek.

My original question still stands: What is real Star Trek?

I can only assume that people making comparisons to transformers etc are referring to the action sequences and the bigger scope, better visual effects etc that have come as a consequence of the increased budget that allows for these better visual effects and new sets.

Therefore I believe that the only way to appease these fans is to reduce the budget from $200 million to approximately $20 million and construct the sets using 1960s carpentry technology from plywood. In addition a return to 60s techniques for visual effects so that's no motion control etc to ensure continuity with the original show.

I want to know where all the boobs were at in the 1st movie that people keep complaining about, cause other than Uhura and Gaila in their bras (and that doesn't count) there was a distinct lack of boobs flashing about.

I saw Kirk's boobs, he was topless.
And yes, it counts. And it's an outrage, a slap in the face of True Trek.

Plenty of skin in Gamesters of Triskelion... and Kirk's boobs! I don't know what Trek that Kirk555555555555555 is talking about that is sans skin, but obviously he isn't referring to TOS.

When Trek is at its best, IMO the sci-fi provides the backdrop for a compelling story. Think City on the Edge of Forever. It challenges your prejudices (Let that Be Your Last Battlefield). The same is true for TNG (The Best of Both Worlds, Chain of Command).

But what I've always liked about Trek is it doesn't try to hit those high watermarks all the time. Sometimes it's just pure entertainment (The Trouble with Tribbles). Sometimes it's funny (We watched By Any Other Name last nite and my kids are still walking around the house, mimicking and laughing about Scotty being drunk). Sometimes it's action... and let's be honest, some episodes just don't work at all.

Ok, that got wordy, so I'll sum up by saying that Trek is about creating a relationship with the audience that allows all of these formats to play out at different times.

IMHO, JJ hit all of these elements in '09 and I don't expect that ID will disappoint.

I didn't see anyone denying it but just because it was like that in the 1960's doesn't mean it has to be like that today. Compare sexism with racism...none of the "minority races" got as much screen time or were major characters, does that mean modern Trek should be the same?

That's still a false comparison. It's already been pointed out several times (Some of those times where by women, I might add.) that sexy and sexism are not the same thing.

The point here is that Star Trek has always been sexy. It has not always been sexist.

Let's face it in the context of the trailers and movie the stripping is gratuitous. As it is in most films. In fact I have never found it to be necessary. It will probably put some women off the film.

I wonder what they think of the decon chamber scenes in Enterprise... Which heavily featured in the adverts before it aired.

Then there are the constant stream of beautiful women cast in Trek in revealing outfits since the 60s thanks mostly to Roddenberry ?

Apparently there is a heavily edited version of Star Trek that has no sex or violence in it. Mostly it's the characters sitting and thinking or giving moralistic speeches. More room for commercials I guess.

I like breasts, I think they're fun and nice to look at, and the opinion according to which a movie would be tainted by the addition of breasts is one I find mind-boggling. Which really, is a moot point, considering that there are no breasts in Star Trek or in Star Trek Into Darkness.

I like breasts more than I like explosions, but again, that's not really relevant, considering that explosions have been part of Star Trek from the beginning.
