Heh, I remember the first time I watched Continuum I had to get to go to the bathroom too many times during the first twenty minutes.
But it was still completely reckless to use an enemy like the replicators that proved themselves to be so intelligent, adaptive and resilient. The Replicators nearly destroyed the entire Milky Way Galaxy. The only reason they failed is because SG1 miraculously found an uber powerful Ancient device and was able to use it just in the nick of time. There were many times where the Replicators adapted to SG1's weapons and they were no longer effective.
And, you cannot count on the shutdown code always working. At some point, the Replicators probably would have found a way to rewrite their code. Plus, we know that Replicators are what they eat. If the Replicators "assimilate" Ori tech, who knows how powerful they would have become. The IOA plan would have problem led to the Replicators conquering the entire Ori Galaxy, evolving to a new breed of uber powerful Replicator, and invading the Milky Way Galaxy again, but this stop with no way for SG1 to stop them.
The IOA plan would have been like Sisko in WYLB, using the Borg to conquer the Dominion. You are likely to just replace one powerful enemy with an even more powerful enemy.
Desperate times...

And here we are, 5 1/2 months after I started this thread, at the end. The final bit of Stargate.
Continuum: This was a nice 'the gangs all here' reunion. I got to see my favorite Goa'uld Nirrti again, and she even got a few lines. Apophis returns! And it was thrilling to see Vala as Katesh.
Needs more Nirrti:
I have to ask though, just what is it with evil overlords giving their underlings Australia? Really, there is not much here, the mining is probably a helluva lot better on some Pegasus galaxy planets.
BA'AL: Camulus has kindly offered one half of his domain, Australia, to the free Jaffa nation.
Maybe he wanted it for the same reason Lex Luthor did..
LEX: Oh, General, the world is a big place. Thank goodness, my needs are small...As it turns out, I have this affinity for beachfront property . . .

How come Baal once the symbiote was extracted didn't shrivel up from his hosts advanced age?
This movie was a bit choppy at times, felt like it could have made a nice mini series. More Goa'uld, more SG;1 trapped in another timeline. And while I know this happens all the time in sci fi shows I was bemused at how BOOM they are back in the extraction chamber none the wiser about what just happened. I started thinking, what if this has already happened to ME? What if I've already had to fix my own time line and I don't even remember it?
And I do have big grumble with Continuum. Vala/Katesh's dress:
It's BEIGE, beige and fat and ugly and looks like a bunch of flour sacks draped around her stomach. It looks like crap. It looks more like something one of the Renaissance villagers would wear than what the consort of Ba'al would wear. Now she does say to Ba'al, "You haven't allowed me to leave your side in fifty years!" so maybe that includes no shopping. But still MISSED OPPORTUNITY!! Vala can look sooo dramatically hot and we've mostly seen her in SG:1 gear of late. Surely they could have decked her in crimson or purples and golds with stuff plunging appropriately. I had the sads over this.
And finally, to Carter!! Looking better ten years after Stargate began than ever!

Having come to the end of this long *cough* trek I want to thank everyone who has posted all their interesting factlets and opinions and commentary in this thread. I have absolutely loved having a place to come and talk about Stargate as I watched it. Everyone was so wonderfully spoiler free

Claudia Black was pregnant, that's why she got a huge dress.
Okay so you're pregnant and fat. This means you are also increasing in breast size. So you put Vala in a STUNNING colour, like a real colour not the colour of fricking toast and you play to the cleavage. Everything else is swathed in a way that makes the cleavage all the more rubenesque. Swathed, because the Goa'uld are so incredibly wealthy and glorious and a few extra yards of fabric make that all the more apparent. A long train would go down a treat.
It could have been fabulous. That dress needs shoulders so that the cleavage really catches the eye, instead we're just looking at bare shoulders. But the biggest crime is that disgusting colour, even if Claudia Black had said, "I WANT A MATERNITY FROCK" they could have done it in a real colour.

Ah, Continuum. When I first saw it I was really harsh on it, and indeed my review in the thread we had on this very forum was quite scathing. On subsequent re-watchings I've lightened up and have even been able to enjoy it a bit.
Still, it is essentially a story that has been done before. Indeed, in many ways it's a retelling of Moebius. Plus, I don't think it's a good idea to spend an entire movie on an alternate timeline story that gets reset at the end. Especially looking back at it since now we know it is the last time we'll see SG-1.
Also, I thought Baal's plan to manipulate Earth's governments into being loyal to the Goa'uld was a lot more interesting than blasting the shit out of the planet that Vala and Cronus ended up doing.
The basic sotryline basically seems to be what the producers had wanted to do if they ever did an SG-1 theatrical movie, that is a Goa'uld on Earth where they take out a few major cities.
And finally, on a sad note, this is the last time Don S Davis appears on Stargate, having died a few weeks prior to Continuum's release.
I assume that when the Tok'ra remove a symbiote they have a way on counteracting that. But some theorize that this wasn't the original Baal, rather a clone and therefore the host body wouldn't really have been all that old.

Why do you think the show got canceled? Thor was a horrible replacement, the audience just didn't connect. Then Sam gets shipped off to Atlantis to have Lemonhead's baby.
And Teal'c was already replaced with evil Teal'c. Where do you think the hair came from...
I thought they left it uncertain which Teal'c we wound up with, like Sliders did with Professor Arturo. So the real Teal'c could still be out there.
What did you think about Emmett Bregman becoming the leader of SG-17? I think it was a ballsy move. A filmmaking SG team has a lot of story potential.
Okay, here goes. Along with the jokes about Teal'c and Bregman (and I think some other made-up thing), I slipped in a reference to the Asgard giving all their secrets to the SGC and then committing racial suicide. It sounds so ridiculous in print that I didn't think you'd peg it as a real spoiler. Then when you actually saw it on the show later, you'd do a double-take. "Wait a minute...."
I think it actually would have worked as long as everyone else here kept mum. Since there's no guarantee of that, it's probably better that I deleted it.

Now I'm doubly sad, as I both enjoyed this thread very much and just found out that one of my most frequent chat buddies for the past decade, Eric Faine, passed away a few days ago. He was only about 35, lived in Queensland and distilled his own liquor to avoid the Australian tax man. I'll miss him horribly, as will many who enjoyed his irreverant wit. I almost had him convinced to watch Stargate.
