This could really jump start a "Star Wars" tv series now since Abrams fingers are all over TV.
He could executive produce like he mostly does now.

The point of my original post I thought clearly illustrated my opinion that Joe Johnston would have been a much better choice. I supported it with his personal experience with Star Wars. Abrams has none.
But you don't need to have "personal experience" with a franchise to do a good job with it. I'm not sure where people get the idea that you have to be a lifelong fan to "get" a series, be it STAR WARS or STAR TREK or THE GILMORE GIRLS for pete's sake.
Again, look at Nicholas Meyer, who had absolutely no "personal experience" with TREK before doing THE WRATH OF KHAN, which is still the best TREK movie to date.
The point is this isn't Gilmore Girls or even Star Trek, this is Star Wars. Something that has been guided frame by frame, for better or for worse by one man. Even when directed by the likes of Kershner and Marquand, you know Lucas still held and exercised total creative control.
Now that he's sold that off and moved on It's imperative that they put someone in there that knows and understands the language of Star Wars. And from what I've seen, I fear that Abrams is simply not a good fit.
I thought that was Master and Commander
Star Trek was dead, of its own doing. Star Trek as it was, could no longer sustain itself. Is anybody seriously going to argue that Voyager and Enterprise were the pinnacle of television? Is anybody going to argue that Nemesis was a cinematic masterpiece? The franchise had become tired and irrelevant. Abrams took it, updated it, and made it something worthwhile again, If he had to pull some of the guts out to do it, then so be it. Slavish devotion to what came before only leads to stagnation.
I meant no disrespect and I have nothing personal against you. Obviously it's good to be passionate about things. I'd say that being passionate about the things you do and the people you love is usually more rewarding than being passionate about Hollywood franchises, but to each their own. It's just that, I don't know how old you are, but after a while you learn to get some perspective and stop focusing too much on the negative.
okay. If you want to spit in someones face cause of a movie he directed...then that's your problem. The worst movie you've ever seen? Okay. Sorry to burst your bubble...it was one of the best reviewed films of the year. Go watch your DVDs.
It's for this kind of reaction I love the fact that Abrams gets more and more popular. I'm sure he'll do a great job. I just hope he returns for Trek XIII at some point.
^What are you talking about? Being a fan is not about having fun. Don't you know that only the very first thing that ever comes out in a franchise is any good, and anything that comes after that is awful? If a movie does not descend down from the heavens and bring world peace, then it is the worst pile of shit ever committed to film. That is what the true fans of anything think.
By the way, I really like Voyager, thought Enterprise was decent, and think that Nemesis was a good movie, and its way too much hate.

I guess with the confirmation from HQ on JJ now directing VII. This video is appropriate. Star Wars dubbed with Star Trek music.

Although, to be fair, I've only seen NEMESIS once, the weekend it opened. I probably need to give it another chance one of these days.

Don't do it. Don't. Do. It. It will only hurt you.
I'm the opposite here. The lack of Lucas's involvement is one of the things that has me the most interested in the new movies. We've gotten six movies with Lucas, let's see what can be done with someone new in charge. We've gotten plenty of good books and comics without Lucas's direct involvement so people other than him are able to tell good SW stories. I think it's also worth mentioning that most of the best screen Wars stories are the ones he wasn't as directly involved with, namely The Clone Wars and Empire Strikes Back.So it's not Abrams involvement, but Lucas' lack of involvement? That's it!! You hit it right on the head. A Star Wars film without Lucas' direct involvement is absolutely unacceptable to me.
These group therapy sessions are worth every penny.
I don't know if I'd go that far, I still think his take on Star Trek kinda sucks and I'd prefer not to have that for Star Wars, but yeah, I think the lack of Lucas is at the heart of my problem with accepting any of this.

Hey, I've seen FINAL FRONTIER at least twice--and lived to tell!
(Heck, I've lived through BATMAN & ROBIN, VAN HELSING, and HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING. I know what pain is.)
By the way, I really like Voyager, thought Enterprise was decent, and think that Nemesis was a good movie, and its way too much hate.
Okay, between this and Farscape, I think we just have to agree that we have completely different tastes!

Meanwhile, I've already watched and enjoyed the new movie several times.
