The Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer is here!

Seriously "my name is legion" you need to change your nick to "i'm a #%$@ retard"

here, mods, let me (sends self warning notification). No problem.

Why do we have to get mean with each other? We're a bunch of fans talking about the franchise we love.

Take it down a notch, dude. :p

Why would Carol be in Starfleet? That theory makes the least sense.
Maybe. But I can think of a million reasons why she'd join Starfleet in the altered timeline just off the top of my head. And they can all be explained with a simple throwaway.

To be fair, Marcus is probably more well known then Dehner.

Then again, I don't think she's either.

If they use Carol Marcus, I don't think they necessarily have to use Khan either. Carol Marcus, the character, is interesting by herself, and she has a much bigger history with Kirk (it's hugely important that she is the mother of his child).

Then again, I can't imagine her squealing like a little girl like in the preview. :p

Out of curiosity, how often to you notify the mod on yourself? It's something of a secret club around here and was the subject of a very popular thread a few years ago...

Don't make Dennis angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

That's a good point. I think there's a lot of potential there, especially with the juxtaposition of the two Kirks and their involvement in David's life.

Not enough, apparently.

Yeah, it's not Mitchell, IMHO. The character is far too overpowered to roll in the more realism-tuned world of Abrams, not to mention the series of circumstances that led to him becoming all stupid-powered hasn't happened.
Umm, yes, it has. As I've already pointed out twice, WNMHGB was the first post-Trek 09 story told in the Abramsverse via the Star Trek Ongoing comic, with Roberto Orci serving as a creative consultant on it.

I really want to read those comics--I'll have to track them down sometime.

If they set up Mitchell's villainy in the comics, that's a big bright red flag.

so could be her or just a random love interest for one of the crew.

Or she could be a yet unmentioned crew member who happens to become important for the plot as part of doing her job without being chiefly someone's love interest or a fanwank?

Exactly. Why does she have to be someone we know from TOS. Fair enough, in all likelyhood she probably will be one of the afforementioned characters, don't mind that at all.

But the whole revenge thing? Anything could have happened to this crew since we last saw them, stands to reason that if its Gary, Khan, Garth or whoever JJ pulls out of thin air, that a revenge plot will be the standard 'paint by numbers' plot. Yay.

Lets face it, JJ is a master at pulling the rug from under our feet, and the blatant glass touch scene is probably deliberate to put fanboys on the Khan scent, and hopefully surprise us in a few days with the reveal that no one expects.

I'm not getting my hopes up for Mitchell and Denher, would love to see them again, but at the same time would like to see a fresh new villain, like we did with Nero. I'm not anti-rehash but seriously, why the frak go to all this trouble to reboot a franchise, and then proceed to tell the same stories just with different actors? What's the point?

Let's see, now....let's list the most common theories as to the identity of Cumberbatch's character and see where we stand:

1. Gary Mitchell.
2. Khan Noonien Singh.
3. Captain Garth of Izar.
4. Gary Seven.

I won't list the Lazarus, Trelane, Charlie Evans or Roger Korby theories because, well, those posters in all likelihood have their tongues planted firmly in cheek and are winking as we speak. The four above seem to be the ones receiving serious consideration and treatment from the fanbase.

What about Ben Finney?

I don't think Mitchell is nearly an interesting enough character to bring in as a villain. It doesn't make sense to me it'd be him.
