I really hope they are not going to burn/kill off Pike. He was one of the few good things about the last movie. I think the next set of films would be better with him in it.

I just watched the trailer again and if it is a funeral scene could it be for Archer? He is referenced in ST09 and must be very old by Kirk's era? Of course it could be a son or grandson who lost his pet beagle.

It's possible that the person dying at the end of the trailer is indeed Pike, and the funeral is his funeral. That would make sense to me, but we have no evidence yet to back any of that up.

Actually, I feel like Pike's death could be quite poignant and give Kirk more of a reason for vengeance himself, since Pike was a mentor to him. Kirk needs to come out from under Pike's shadow in a sense and become the Kirk we've known from the prime universe. That's a basic young crazy kid to adult hero character arc.

I like the idea of Archer's funeral, but that's only coming from a fan of Enterprise, and I really, sincerely doubt they would reference Enterprise in anything else other than a quick, throwaway line. Not enough people seeing the film would have seen that series, the least popular of them all.

THE_FETT, WNMHGB has already been done in the Abramsverse via the IDW Star Trek Ongoing comics (which, for all intents and purposes are official canon), as I've already mentioned once already. This doesn't preclude Cumberbatch being Mitchell, but if he is, this film's story is a sequel to WNMHGB, not a retelling thereof.

Yeah, it's not Mitchell, IMHO. The character is far too overpowered to roll in the more realism-tuned world of Abrams, not to mention the series of circumstances that led to him becoming all stupid-powered hasn't happened. Plus, even if it did, where's the motive for revenge?

I feel like, assuming it's a TOS character, it's much more likely to be Khan. The timeline and events have been radically altered with the incursion by Nero, and who's to say that somehow Botany Bay didn't get discovered by, say, the Klingons? If they found him and put he and his people through hell and maybe killed a lot of them (his family), and then he escaped, he could well blame the people of Earth for having banished them in the first place. Is that perhaps stretching a bit? Sure, but no more so than Gary "I passed through the galactic barrier and now I'm crazy with the psi-power!" Mitchell.

That said, we have Cumberbatch in a Starfleet uniform, which seems to point more toward Garth and his walk-in closet full of crazy. As has been stated previously, he did have some kinda nutty explosive that could possibly do serious damage to the fleet if it were massed above Earth.

    *grumble grumble*

Regardless, it's going to be an interesting next few months here at the TrekBBS. ;-)

    Peace

If it ends up being Khan, I will probably scream into a pillow for five minutes, and then drink.

I also think kirk and the enterprise returns to earth after a surprise attack from Gary or he starts the attack while they are there makes more sense as you've got Spock possible chasing him and pike dies in the attack or get injured badly. Also the scenes from YouTube showing Spock fighting BC might be from that scene as Spock is wearing his blue standard uniform and the guy crashing out of the window seems to be BC ???

Let's see, now....let's list the most common theories as to the identity of Cumberbatch's character and see where we stand:

    1. Gary Mitchell.
    2. Khan Noonien Singh.
    3. Captain Garth of Izar.
    4. Gary Seven.

I won't list the Lazarus, Trelane, Charlie Evans or Roger Korby theories because, well, those posters in all likelihood have their tongues planted firmly in cheek and are winking as we speak. The four above seem to be the ones receiving serious consideration and treatment from the fanbase.

looking carefully frame by frame, I say that the ship rises out of the sea IS NOT THE ENTERPRISE. The nacelles are very close to the ship body which appears tapered and not disk-shaped. It is another ship.

It beats screaming into a glass of whiskey for five minutes and then trying to drink a pillow.

That takes a special kind of drunk.

The potential easter egg they did drop was that, in this timeline, Dehner and McCoy were once lovers.

I might become that special if Khan is the villain.

Okay, maybe not--if someone buys me the Next Gen Blu-rays for Christmas, I might reconsider flinging myself into an extended, alcohol-soaked spiral of shame. I'll have something to distract myself. :)

Maybe it's the drinking and then crying into a pillow I do. I don't clearly recall, as I'm generally a special kind of drunk by then.

I'll see if someone can video me next time, which will likely be about 6 hours from now, and then I'll know for certain.
