The ship coming out of the water looked like a shuttlecraft.

I assume you remember all about the fins and the moving parts on these nacelles when they are active?

    Why not?

I'm not saying it's not the Enterprise. She's, perhaps, just been a bit modified.

Let's not forget that the design of the Enterprise could be modified.. either between the films, or in the film for a specific purpose (like a water mission). Both types of scenarios have happened in batman films for the Batsuit. In the original films, the suit changed between the films. In the new films, Bruce needed a different suit for functionality reasons. Maybe Starfleet modified the Enterprise to fly in gaseous/ liquid environments after the Nero incident (or because of it) or Kirk was preparing for the mission...

Or veiled by *gasp* millions of gallons of alien water pouring off her in large amounts completely obscuring parts of her from view in the 2.3 seconds we get to see her.

I do, and I can see that the fins aren't extended/open in the water-shot.
I still think they look different.

Maybe the Enterprise just needed a wash after being in the dust of that gas giant in the last film?

They at least had to repair all the gravitational damage from the black hole ripping her up and the damage on the port nacelle from the Mayflowers saucer impacting it.

No, the water at the back end of the nacelle is mostly gone, and there is no downward swoop on the fin. Look at the yellow line on my second picture

Fair enough. There might have been modifications or the water could be distorting what we see.

Either way, one thing I can't accept is that it's not the big E.

They're not different. It's exactly the same.

BTW, you can clearly see the hull lettering NCC-17__ on the nacelle.

Here's a thought. It's not rising perfectly on the level and the nacelles are pointed up a bit. Your reading too much into an obscured image.

What if it's Old Spock and new Spock

Old Spock: "Ship, out of danger?"

    New Spock: "Yes"

Old Spock: "You must mind meld with Jim, then, you'll know what to do."

New Spock and Old Spock simultaneously: "Live long and prosper."

    Old Spock: :"ugh."

    McCoy: "He's dead Jim."

Thank you. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who saw the same thing. Probably one of the "shuttle-on-'roids" from the first movie.

Well exactly, the fins would collect water between them, the nacelle is not perfectly straight etc

They wouldn't waste this shot on anything but the big E herself, nothing else.

Indeed I did... 6 different versions until I got it to about 80% right. :)

The engines are the same... after looking at them and building them over and over, it's pretty obvious. :) Like Vektor said, it's just the perspective that makes them look different. If you look closely, you can see the rim of the saucer starting to come through the water, too...
