I was arguing that on another site. One of the themes of the first movie was people ending up where they belonged even though circumstances had changed. That could still be happening.If the comic is just a trick to divert fans' attention and will the disowned from continuity later, there is no need for him to have the same god like powers he had in the series.
Think about Pike: He ended up in a wheelchair in both the old timeline and the new, but the circumstances were completely different and so was his end-state (no disfiguring and speechlessness in the new timeline).
Mitchel could be the similar: gaining super human abilities, but not the extent he had in the original timeline.
