Wouldn't it be marvellous if they re-released the first trilogy in the original, theatrical format without any of the stupid stuff Lucas added later?

Yes, that would be very awesome, but I doubt that will happen.

Actually, I think it's highly likely it WILL happen.

I agree, I can easily see Hammil in this movie in a sort of passing the torch role like Nimoy in Trek XI.

Maybe Luke will be the big bad of the three films?

Plus he kinda looks like Yoda now, so there's symmetry.

Yes you may and that's who I was thinking too. MI4 was absolutely awesome, I was very skeptical of MI4 at first, but it was a nice mix of action and story and character development. The action sequences were something I can see in a Star Wars movie and the character development is something Star Wars desperately needs. I was not bored once during MI4 and I felt very satisfied as to how the story played out and the humor was very subtle and not campy. I think Brad Bird would be an excellent choice.

I have no thoughts on the films, as there are no details yet. Some people are saying that the nutrilogy can't be worse than the PT, but frankly, I've been used to disappointment in the Star Wars films since Return of the Jedi. I'm cautiously optimistic. :techman:

Yeah based on MI4 I'd agree, a well directed film.

Anyone else had a play with this yet?

If it happens, it won't be for at least several years. Earlier in the thread someone quoted a news article as stating that 20th Century Fox holds the distribution rights to Star Wars "in perpetuity," and the distribution rights for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi until 2020.

Disney, then, wouldn't be in a position to re-release the classic trilogy in any form for at least eight or nine years - and even then only two of the three films.

The only thing that needs "fixing" about the Special Editions is Greedo firing first. The other enhancements worked just fine.

I do kinda like the idea of starting off VII around 20 to 25 years in the future and with Mark Hamill as Luke force-walking his spirit back to post ROTJ in order to get his past self to make different decisions to have a better future.

Would be cool seeing the Falcon destroyed in the first few minutes of EP VII.

Yup. I mean for starters it has technically actually happened (my DVD copy of the Star Wars trilogy is the one that includes the original cuts of all three movies as special features)* and that's when Lucas had the final say on the subject.

Now I wouldn't be surprised if let's say remastered pristine prints of the original films were made either stupidly expensive and/or only available in some arbitrary limited way (like Disney's Vault) but I'd take it as a given that sooner or later they're going to be released.

Hell, why not a release that offers every variation on every movie? The Phantom Menace, theatrical and home video cuts. Return of the Jedi, theatrical, special edition, DVD smirking Hayden release and NOOOOOO Blu-Ray. The original film with its lack of a subtitle or the subtitle added in or whatever. Given the passion of SW fans for the multiplicity of copies that seems like a logical endpoint and not that different from the Blade Runner Final Cut releases with multiple cuts of the same film.

*Yeah, yeah, I know. The image quality isn't good enough. This doesn't mean it hasn't actually happened.

The reason Hammil cannot be Luke is because the lead character for a global summer popcorn blockbuster must be a) a huge name like Tom Cruise or Arnold Swartzenegger or b) a young, pretty unknown like Chris Pine.

Hammil is neither, and nobody wants big name stunt-casting for the role (Brad Pitt would be the best we could hope for), and from Disney's perspective, it would be an unnecesary expense (Star Wars + Luke Skywalker should be more than enough to put butts in seats) so it's gonna be a Chris Pine type recasting.

My hunch is that he'll be closer to 30 than 40. Disney is going to want to devote at least three movies to the guy, so he needs to start out on the younger side. The older the character is, the more you lose the teenagers, who are a vital part of the audience.

Anyone who is sick of the whole Skywalker schitck, don't despair. No doubt Disney will use the upcoming trilogy as a launching pad for newer characters to continue making money indefinitely. But our new hero, Mak Baloo, isnt going to put butts in seats on his/her/its own immediately, so there needs to be a transition period.

There's plenty of time for that. In 15 years Luke can be Mak Baloo's brown-hooded mentor, but before then, Disney will want to extract maximum value from the Luke Skywalker brand before building up the Mak Baloo brand.

    Um, Temis?

Of course Mark Hamll could be Luke. As Mark Hamill he may not be anybody, but as Luke he's the protagonist of some of the best known and successful blockbuster movies around.

Also presumably Mark Hamill would be playing a mentor role to some new kid who's the protagonist of the new trilogy. He'd be Leonard Nimoy to that guy's Chris Pine.

If Luke Skywalker is in the movies he WILL be played by Mark Hamill. He just won't be the central character. They'll introduce a young, 20 something as the main protagonist. Only an idiot would use Luke and not use Hamill.

In terms of recasting, McGregor was playing an Obi-wan of a different age, so it wasn't as noticeable. It would be kind of weird going from Episode VI to VII and seeing completely new people playing a young to middle age Skywalker, Solo or Leia. That's why I hope this new trilogy takes us far into the future. And maybe it's just me, but it's time to put Artoo and Threepio to bed, imo.

So in the final analysis, i want to see "A while ago, in a galaxy far far away..." ;)
