PICTURE POST II!

Beard Tracker: Day 23

Day23.jpg

I approve of this.

So the building itself was the shelter? Not pointing to some underground lead lined bunker?

My church's shelter is in the basement- I've seen it. It's somewhat deep down...but there is a window at one end. Kinda defeated the purpose. :p

I need to ask the building manager to let me in and take photos. It's sort of funny to look at these now. The Civil Defense stuff (water, crackers, Geiger counters) is long gone, though.

The fallout shelters were really designed more for people not likely to be in an immediate target area, like my town (Fredericksburg, Virginia). We'd still get fallout if a bomb was dropped on Quantico Marine Corps Base.

I don't remember if I posted these photos from my trip to Louisville this summer- I went to Mega Caverns, a lime quarry that was turned into a fallout shelter around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. It had a capacity of 50,000 people!

That last photo is a display of what life would have been like in the caverns after a nuclear war. It was CREEPY. And I'm not talking about the mannequins- the darkness, the dripping water from underground springs, the chill...*shudder* I think I would have rather died in the blast, thank you very much. And another thing- the shelter would only have been useful if a bomb was dropped on Fort Knox. If it had been Louisville, they would have been fucked. The caverns are deep, but not that deep! (End of history lesson. :p)

Most schools I went to were build in the sixties and seventies and therefore had these strange kind of basements (usually used for youth-clubs actually) and one house down the street where I live, there was a shelter, until they dismantled it a year or two ago, but that was the WW2-kind... no good as a fall-out shelter for WW3! I now wish I had taken a few pictures of it.

^Yeah, I'm pretty tired of it, but it's actually been that way for most of my life. At least this time I got an awesome disc that has every image from the CT scan. If I scroll through them it's like watching a movie of my insides, which is very cool.

I had one of those for my back - you're right; Very cool.

Had some professional pictures done today. Here's one:

Aren't my lungs pretty?

It's like I've always said, there's nothing sexier than a woman with a great set of lungs! :D
Well, okay, I haven't always said it. It would have been kind of odd trying speak when one is still a zygote, but still, the sentiment is the same.

^I'm sure you mean the one above mine, but I sure liked reading your post right below mine :p :rommie:

There, I fixed it to make it clear which picture I meant. Not that Rojo isn't adorable, but I did mean yours!

Oh
Blushemoticon.gif
thanks!

At that time I was trying to cling on to reality with my fingernails with as much success as you can gather from the image.
I suppose you could call it photographic evidence of my lowest point.

I looked like that for most of a week...

This picture looks a LOT like Three Caves here in Huntsville. Of course, considering that both were originally limestone mines and both were designated fallout shelters during the Cuban Missile Crisis, I'm not surprised.

And what helped you pull through... if it is not too personal a question?

^Lots of things (friends & family mostly) but I didn't like any of the side effects to the medicine the professionals wanted me to take so I wasn't medicated and that might have had some influence on my chosen look at some point.

That's an eerie amount of detail on your spine there! Also, the scale on the side, is that the actual length from one point to the other on your body then? In that case, I knew you where a bit shorter then I am, but not by that much. Scale is a hard thing to estimate some times.
