Unhappiness is a sweet little Siamese kitten dying :(

What a horrendous start to my day this morning. A siamese kitten had taken up residence on my porch about six months ago. I couldn't take her in because I have a cat who doesn't get along well with other cats and I have a big dog. I didn't know what to do because it became apparent that the family up the street from me had abandoned her when they moved. That family had a big dog just like my Hannah, which explained the kitten not being afraid of dogs. She'd follow us every single day on our walk. The neighbors thought it was cute, but they have pets of their own. I couldn't bear to take another animal to the local shelter, so I fed her and gave her water every day. I'd hear her meow every morning. She slept under my porch. I heard her meowing this morning around six-thirty for her food but I was so exhausted from a lousy week at work with my psycho boss that I took a shower and had some breakfast first. She didn't sound distressed. I took Hannah outside in the yard, and there was kitty lying there dead. :( She wasn't sick. I'd greeted her as always last night when I got home from work. She'd pop out from under the porch to greet me.

She hadn't been bitten or chewed on. She wasn't bloody. Just lying on her side with her hind leg was splayed out; it looked like there was a small rip in her skin with a small red protrusion poking out from it. It had barely been half an hour since I'd heard her meowing. My porch isn't very tall. I can't imagine how she could have impaled herself. :( Did anyone have a similar experience of an animal dying so suddenly? I live on a dead end road near the very end. It wasn't a car. She was too far away from the street.

I took her body to the animal control office because I couldn't bear to put her in the trash and I don't have a shovel to dig a proper grave; it's been raining really hard the past 2 days so there's a great deal of mud. They weren't even open. :scream: I didn't want to carry her in a bag into a vet's office that might have people and kids with their pets in the waiting room, so I put her under a bush in the big field beyond my house and put some dirt over her. I really didn't know what to do. I wish I'd opened the door when she meowed. :(

Sorry, just had to lament.

Thank you. I had asked around at work if anyone wanted her, but they all have pets or live in places where they can't have them. My friend Lydia wanted her, but her son is allergic to cats. It just brings home how many lovely animals there are out there who would make such wonderful pets who come to a sad end. It's heart breaking. If my former neighbor were in front of me I'd punch him right in the face for abandoning her.

Well, if you see a neighbor kid out with a new pellet gun, try not to completely freak out on him, or at least try not to make the top of the Drudge Report.

Poor kitty. I know it hurts, Dorian. But don't be hard on yourself. It sounds like you took very good care of her.

I'll try. No promises. Fortunately I've never seen any of the kids up the street playing with a toy like that. The only kids up there have a dog and a cat of their own. They seem like nice enough kids. I can't see them shooting pellet guns at another cat. At least I never have so far.

The wound was small, but I don't think it was a pellet gun. One, it was way too early in the morning and raining, and the position of the small wound didn't fit. It was right inside her little leg on her underbelly. Just a small tear in the skin with some red...I guess it was muscle tissue....protruding out. It didn't even look that bad; that's what's so startling. A pellet gun would have gotten her on the side, the head, or the outside of the leg. She must have jumped from somewhere and caught her belly landing. It's the only thing I can think of that makes any sense at all. I keep expecting to hear her on the porch or see her when I open the door. :(

Thank you for the sympathy, everyone.

Possibly a snake bite? Anything venemous in your area?

Oklahoma has poisonous coral snakes, but I don't think that's it. There aren't any rattlers where I am and the wound didn't look like a puncture from snake fangs. Then again, I'm not an expert on what a snake bite looks like. Even calling it a wound seems like a misnomer; it didn't look jagged or bloody or particularly big. Maybe a half inch opening in the skin at most with the red tissue poking out. If I didn't know better, I'd think she got slashed by an opossum. There's a few of them in the fields beyond my house and I've seen them walking down the street at night once in a while. It's possible. I have a nasty scar on my forearm from where I got slashed by one of those little suckers' claws two years ago. It bled like crazy. Kitty didn't have any blood on her fur and I didn't see any on the porch or the ground. Maybe the rain washed it away. :( What's shocking is her dying so fast when she was happy and healthy last night. Whatever killed her happened between 9 last night and 7 this morning. She was meowing at the door at 6:30; she didn't sound distressed. Maybe she was too weak. :(

An infection wouldn't have killed her that fast and she didn't look as if she'd bled out. Maybe you're right about the snake bite. I had a friend who lost a pet to a snake bite years ago; it was a coral snake and the venom killed her dog very fast. If not that, internal bleeding is still what I think is the likely culprit. If she tried to jump from the roof and hit the corner of the porch railing, or a branch if she jumped down from the tree. Just a freak thing, I guess. She'd climb my tree all the time.

I'll never know. All I know is that she was fine last night. I opened the door and poured her a little food. Scratched her behind the ears and closed the door. I didn't know it would be the last time. :(

Oh, I know I will. I'm always sad to see abandoned animals and I know that pets die. Maybe it's just because I'm having such a tough time of it now, but this one particular little cat dying just hit me right in the gut. My parents are having a hard time, they're getting older--I think this poor little sweet, affectionate cat just dying like that in a half hour's time hit me particularly hard. How fragile life is and all those schmaltzy but very true parts of life. Dammit, she was a sweet little thing. I had put off buying her a little toy she could push around on the porch. sigh

I think I'll go wait for the cute kitty that's been showing up by my pond for months. She hasn't been there the last two nights, and I've been getting worried.

I hope she shows up, gturner. I do. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If my internet craps out tomorrow (I've been having serious tech problems) and I don't post, I'm rooting for your little cat to show back up. :techman:
