Ernie Banks' son was the coach for the actors on set, as well.
Even during times of war, there are times out for real life things, including recreation.
Yeah, he specifically switched to bat left-handed if I recall correctly.Fun fact: While Rom was the most incompetent one on the team, Max Grodenchik himself is an excellent player. He almost played in the major leagues, in fact. He had to go out of his way to play as badly as Rom.

Does anyone know his past baseball credentials? I am a huge baseball fan. I had no idea Max of all people was that much of an athlete. I would love to know if he played college baseball or even minor league baseball.
Timo, kind of tough on Data's catcher, don't you think? As a pitcher, he should be able to defeat all Vulcan attempts at batting, though, as he can give the ball superhuman velocity ...
The one caveat to Data pitching is who in the world could be the catcher?

Yeah, poor Nog. If Data was pitching he wouldn't make it past the second inning.![]()

Psshh, that part's easy. "COMPUTER! Create a catcher... with the ability to defeat Data!"
I absolutely adored this episode - I actually recently requested a Niners ball cap for my birthday, hope the wife remembers...
I don't think Data would have been enough of a threat to win the game on his own. Given the other Niners' poor hitting in the game, Data would probably only have come to bat 3 or 4 times, with no one else on base every time. So even if Data hit a home run every time, that would only amount to 3 or 4 runs versus the Vulcans' 10. Data would have to also scale back his superhuman abilities. He could almost certainly cover most of the field by himself, and even stop home runs by jumping high enough to catch them, but that would do real violence to the integrity of the game, and I don't think even Sisko wanted to win that badly. If he did, he'd probably have recruited more Klingons to his team instead of his friends. I bet he could have found several Klingons who'd be willing to play. Worf certainly seemed to be getting into the game (Death to the opposition! ROFLMAO).
