Take Me Out to the Holosuite

Better, I'm sure, but I don't really think that was the theme of the episode. Winning was never the idea, even though it was Sisko's idea unequivocally until right near the end.

In theory, by playing midfield, Data should have been able to catch every ball batted or thrown - he should be able to run fast enough, even though this is never quite shown (we see his muscles in rapid action in "The Naked Now") and he should be able to calculate the trajectories and unerringly grip the incoming missiles regardless of their speed...

As a batter, he'd be able to contribute less, as he would be only one player rather than an entire field! As a pitcher, he should be able to defeat all Vulcan attempts at batting, though, as he can give the ball superhuman velocity that defeats the Vulcan (let alone human or Bajoran!) ability to calculate the trajectory and respond - or even a velocity that makes batting a futile prospect regardless of whether the bat meets the ball. Data's own batting would be more limited than his pitching, mainly by the material strength of the bat.

To defeat a fielding team Data, Vulcans would probably have to resort to a series of sacrifice bunts and fairly desperate short-and-low-trajectory hits.

I understand that. I was just wondering, with Data's speed (and his likely ability to catch all but the hardest hit balls), and strength (hitting a home run every time up if the Vulcans didn't intentionally walk him), that Sisko's team might actually pull an upset.

And if Data pitched, then they'd certainly win, because he'd just blow fastballs by them. I could be wrong, but I doubt even a Vulcan could catch up to that kind of hypothetical heat.

I'm sorry, I know this episode was supposed to be whimsical, but after watching this, I wanted to slam my head against a brick wall.

Oh yeah, the thread. I would imagine with Sisko's competitiveness at the beginning of the training, he would make Data the only player on the team, and Data would get a perfect game. At least, before 2379 :borg:

Because...?

The episode was ridiculous.

After Billions of lives being at stake episodes prior,
THE MAIN CONFLICT OF THE EPISODE WAS THAT SOME ARROGANT VULCANS COULD BE BETTER THAN CAPTAIN SISKO AT BASEBALL....
Nothing more needs to be said.

Admittedly, it was fun to watch though.

Even during times of war, there are times out for real life things, including recreation.

US troops played baseball during downtime druing the Civil War, and both World Wars.

That's what made DS9 so great, it potrayed the human emotional element of war without having to resort to flashy graphics to compensate for poor writing unlike some other Trek series.

Remember kids, if a war is going on, literally every second of every minute of your life is all about that war and absolutely no personal relationships, activities, or thoughts are pursued as long as that war goes on.

THE MORE YOU KNOW~

In case that's too subtle for some people (these days I try not to overestimate), I agree with the posters directly above me. I also rather enjoyed the episode quite a bit.

I would think that a baseball game like the one we saw would be more important during a war than it would be normally. Y'gotta keep sane. :)

Yeah. Even with Data's downloaded memories, Beta was still behaving loopy at the end of Nemesis. Imagine Sisko's frustration as his star android player zones out about halfway through the game... puts the baseball mit on his head like a hat, then sits down in the field with a dopy grin (facing away from home plate, of course) and begins eating grass while humming Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

Fun fact: While Rom was the most incompetent one on the team, Max Grodenchik himself is an excellent player. He almost played in the major leagues, in fact. He had to go out of his way to play as badly as Rom.

Didn't know that. Though if you think about it, as short as those Ferengi actors are, they'd have a small strike zone!

The one caveat to Data pitching is who in the world could be the catcher? Especially with the dropped third strike rule. You'd have to have someone standing by the backstop waiting to pounce on the ball and throw the runner out at first.

Also: Cirroc Lofton is the nephew of Kenny Lofton, who is a veteran (retired) major league player.

I remember him. He was the Cubs leadoff man for awhile in 03. I was disapointed we didn't keep him. Fast guy. Definitely explains why Jake looked pretty convincing on the baseball diamond.
