Guinan and Q; ever explained?

I once proposed doing a book about this, but Paramount asked me to refrain. At the time, they thought it best to keep the matter mysterious, which was a perfectly legitimate call, especially since TNG was still producing new episodes.

Now that TNG is off the air, they might feel differently.

I'd still agree with them. Any attempt of explaining the backstory will ruin it.

And then you'd have to connect her being in the Nexus, her ability to sense timeline changes and her being a match for Q, and Q's comment "Guinan, ah that's what you call yourself now" when she was clearly called Guinan even 400 years earlier and was living on Earth.

You'd turn her into a Q, or into another super being, or into a special El-Aurian, or whatever, and find some contrived reason why she always stays with Picard. In any way, it'll ruin it.

.

And? They both seem to be long-lived beings, so their feud could go back far more than four hundred years.

IIRC, didn't Guinan make a brief apperance in the Eugenic Wars books by Greg Cox? I think she made an appearance and helped Gary Seven and then disappeared. Its been a number of years since I read the books so I'm not 100% sure.

You know, I can't remember. It's been a number of years since I wrote those, too!

I suspect she must have made a cameo somewhere. Everybody else did! :)

I was having a rummage through some old paperbacks this morning and found one I don't remember buying.

Remember 'The Armor Trap' Greg ?

Wow, I didn't realize you were on this site!

Ohmigod, that takes me back! (For the uninitiated, that was my first IRON MAN novel, which I wrote way back when.)

It's funny, sometimes I'll be rummaging in my attic and stumble onto some old project that I'd forgotten about.

"Hey, that's right. I wrote a TOM SWIFT novel . . . !"

According to Memory Beta she did. :)

What's embarrassing is when you're at a convention and some fan comes up to you with questions about some book or scene you wrote fifteen years ago, and you're like "Umm, I can't remember. That was fifty books ago . . . ."

I would have had no idea who you were when I purchased The Armor Trap years ago - my wife passed it to me from a box with 'here - it's one of yours !'. I looked at the author and had an 'OMG' moment ! It says in the write-up it's your first solo novel !

A little surprised I got it - I don't often buy superhero novels. Haven't read it yet - I must get around to it...

That's right! I had done a couple of collaborations before, including my first two Trek books. But the Iron Man book I wrote all by myself!

For that reason alone I'll keep it !

The Q/Guinan back story is for me one of the biggest threads never picked up on by the series.

If this topic is ever fully explored, I do hope that it fits the theme of Guinan's anachronisms and various other powers either stemming from her race or encounter with the Nexus... I wonder if writers have a hard time dealing with the Nexus angle. In many ways, that aspect of Generations raised more question than it answered.

It was handled nicely in Indistinguishable from Magic.

Guinan was in Paris in the early 1990s. I wonder if she did a sideline in Whoopi Goldberg impersonations.

^How do we know Whoopi Goldberg isn't just the name Guinan is currently disguising herself as while she waits to get off this planet? She asked to be in TNG because, sometimes, the best place to hide is in a truth!
