This audio problem is a disaster for this release. For something that up until late yesterday seemed to be the reference-quality release for remastering older TV shows turns out to be a badly compromised product. Considering how much of the promotion for this release has focused on the amount of work and passion that went into this release (which I don't doubt was genuine), for this to have happened is almost unfathomable.
To me, one of the best things about this TNG-HD project was the goodwill it generated toward the fans, a commitment from CBS to this property... Just "doing the job right" was such a focus of this release, not just a cheap up-convert of the DVD, a real "back to the original elements" effort, and for me, a lot of that goodwill has been lost as a result.
It's such a shame, because the team obviously did such a great job, particularly on the video, and to have the audio compromised in such a way, from what by all accounts was just a stupid oversight is really inexcusable. I wonder if there was such a focus on the video remastering that somehow the audio mixing wasn't a priority.
The notion that no one at CBS caught this is difficult to believe, but here we are - took the fans all of 2 seconds to find the problem.
Clearly, quality-control at CBS needs some improvement.
Even a disc replacement program is really not a full resolution, I for one do not want to send my discs in the mail and get back discs, hopefully fixed, in who knows what condition, possibly having to cut the UPC out of the case as well. Just a mess.
I would prefer CBS re-issue it to stores, clearly labeled as the "fixed" version of the set. Getting a full refund for purchases of the incorrect version of the set really isn't unreasonable, in my opinion.
CBS - fix this so that it doesn't happen again. Get seasons 2-7 right and commit to doing all the other series as well.
Another reason this is so perplexing is that CBS already did the 7.1 remixes on TOS S1-3, apparently without a problem. What happened here?
I guess what really gets me is the idea that this BD release isn't up to the standard of the series, this isn't just "some series" - for the people buying this set, which are the ones CBS should be obliged to satisfy, as they are their customers, no one is going to Best Buy to pick up some other title and buys TNG for $60 as an impulse purchase.
This BD release isn't good enough for TNG, nor is it good enough considering all the time, money, and effort that was invested in the remastering process.
Altogether, a terrible screw-up somewhere along the line. Sad.
