Woman of the Week #1 - Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton: Great president or greatest president? ;)

I was never a big fan of Hillary, and never understood why she stood by Bill and let herself be humiliated. Did she want her turn at the political table that much? :(

She has been a good Secretary of State and has impressed me enough so that I now wish she had been the Presidential candidate instead of Obama, who is (to me) Jimmy Carter II. She would have done a better job.

I still think that she needs to kick Bill to the curb though. She can now make it without him. :p
QFT!

I voted that she'd make a good President, because I think she would. I also believe she'd make a better President than Obama.

So has she actually done anything herself other than being married to bill clinton? if she has it isnt obvious to non americans. but i'll give her tedious patronising credit for not looking as old as she is

While nothing in your post violates the rules in any actionable way, we're trying to maintain a more civilized tone in these threads as a counterbalance to threads dealing with women elsewhere on the board (or how they're often treated here in Misc.), so I would appreciate it if you could make an effort to respect that.

As far as your "tedious patronizing credit" comment, if that's a reference to the discussion of her age and health earlier in the thread, the health of the President of the US (as with many leaders) can often noticeably degrade over a term or two due to stress, excessive travel, long hours, and other factors, so that's a legitimate concern for a male or female candidate of her age and has nothing to do with being patronizing.

As I've gotten older and more intelligent in general I've come to think more and more highly of Hillary. I do feel like she'd be a good President, though I've got no opinion on whether she'd be better than Obama. I do think she's been a good Secretary of State and am kinda sad she's stepping down, but that's pretty par for the course for that position, right?

Just imagine I'd said Bill was only a good president because Hillary was there to advise him. :D

Maybe I'm mistaken or misremembering, but isn't one of the common "criticisms" from rightwingers of Clinton's terms that Hillary was much more proactive and involved than First Ladies had been before? Who knows, maybe you'd be right. ;)

Hilary has been one of this countries best Secretaries of State. She has really come into her own more so than when she was First Lady, Senator, or Presidential Candidate Clinton. Hindsight being 20/20, she would have made a good president. Better or worse than Obama? I don't know. Only history will know just how effective a president Obama has been, so I can't even venture a guess.

Great thread, Kestra! Top-notch first pick too. :)

Emilia started this thread, not Kestra. ;)

Sorry, I'm an idiot! Ugh!

Emilia - Great thread!

Kestra - Please don't smash me! :)

Yeah, it is. It's an utterly exhausting job and I can understand why she's want to give it up but I wish she wouldn't as she has the personality for the position; she's affable but also capable of putting her foot down.

I think Hillary has done the best she could as Secretary of State, but she's often been hampered by the Administration, such as during the crises in Libya and Egypt. It was rumoured that she was thinking of throwing in the towel, a move Bill supported, or so went the gossip.

Anyway, I'll suggest Jackie Cochran for a Woman of the Week, just because she olds more aviation records than anyone and is almost never mentioned.

They did, which is pretty funny when you take Nancy Reagan into account. Gotta love politics. :rommie:

If Hillary was proactive and involved, Monica Lewsinky's name wouldn't have gotten within 10 miles of the Senate, much less the House. A more common criticism was the mysterious billing records of the Rose law firm, Hillary making a hundred thousand in cattle futures when all her co-ihnvestors were taken to the cleaners, and of course the strange death of Vince Foster and how his office was scrubbed. Not to forget is the firing of the White House travel office, the FBI files on Republicans that inexplicably ended up in the White House, and giant bags of illegal Chinese cash that nobody could quite account for.

Her time in the White House was not all roses and smiles. It just seems like Camelot or nirvana when compared to the present.

So has she actually done anything herself other than being married to bill clinton? if she has it isnt obvious to non americans.

You should refrain from speaking for the rest of us please, as I am sure many of us are quite well aware of her achievements.

Especially considering the thread was started by a non-American.

Ah, so if a husband cheats on his wife it's her fault?

I actually like her quite a bit and wish she had gotten the nomination over Obama.

Well, according to the (*cough* scientifically valid *cough*) poll in this thread her approval ratings beat those of every president since... uhh... FDR?

I dunno, is that what the poll indicates? It's true that the vast majority voted that she'd be a good President, but only 4 votes for "better than Obama." So...if we can't be a strong showing for that option how can we know that her approval ratings beat anyone but (maybe) Jimmy Carter?

I figured that the "*cough* scientifically valid *cough*" part of my sentence clearly marked it as a humorous statement but apparently I need more smileys for you, old man. ;)

Oh, I wasn't taking it seriously - just pointing out the massive and obvious flaw in your shoddily-constructed, bitter, gender-bashing agenda.

And now, Release The Smilies:

;);) :lol: :p :techman: :cool: ;) :mallory::bolian::devil: ;) :lol:

When you reach my advanced age you'll realize and have to admit that I'm absolutely right, all the time. No one has ever been as right as I, for I remember the 1960s and once took part in a student demonstration.*

*Actually, it was kind of a drunken mass streaking thing on campus. But I totally respected and fought for the right of all the /c/h/i/c/k/s women to get naked in public like that.

I see what you did there! :rommie:

I think the Rommie is Just the only appropriate smiley here.

Well, my interpretation of the cough cough was that it was a reflection of the polling method. As to the choice that people are so overwhelmingly agreeing on, that the Madam Secretary would have made a "good" president, well, "good" means different things to different people.

How do you extrapolate a relative comparison, when all you have is the characterization of "good?"

At first I was like :wtf:, but then I 'ed.
