Bizarre Foods You've Eaten

^I had jellyfish at my uncle's wedding. My aunt Mai is from Vietnam and all the food was traditional Vietnamese. I quite liked the jellyfish, it was like noodles, but with the texture of grapes.

Cat
Dog
Kangaroo
Tripe
Cow tongue
Pigeon(served with the heads on)
Squirrel
Rabbit
Deer hearts ( which I do not really like)
Ostrich
Alligator
Moose

I had sea urchin roe (uni) sushi one time. I always saw them using it on Iron Chef and had to try it. It was slimy and pretty nasty.

The one I was amazed by is eel. I've tried that a few times, and it's slightly sweet.

Eel is very delicious. Seal is pretty tasty as well.

I forgot about seal. I had raw dried seal at a powwow once. It was...different. I've also eaten a buffalo often (a cultural thing). It pretty much tastes like beef.
I love buffalo, but still prefer moose! Buffalo steaks need to be cooked right though.

It was served on this mini-pizza thing. I made it a point to bite into the arachnid to be sure I tasted it. I tasted NOTHING! I heard a little crunch, but it had no taste. Talk about disapointed.

Aah, well. I have severe issues with food, so I've never really eaten "bizarre" foods. I tried seabass once. It was vile. And just a few weeks ago, I sat down to eat one of my favourite meals, rumbledethumps - a lovely Scottish dish, and it was like eating salt. Nothing but salt. Now that was bizarre!

Bone marrow (we make our own Pho - it really enhances the flavor)
Alligator
Liver
Rattlesnake

LOL same here. Alligator is pretty good, especially with redcurrant chutney!

The weirdest dish I had was when I was working for a farming project in Namibia. We got a slight pest problem... well, we got raided by a few billion migrating locusts. Our native colleagues caught and BBQed them and we Europeans came up with a few ideas for dips. The most popular combination turned out to be Locust with Tzatziki, a recipe that after 25 years is still in use as my sis had a chance to discover when she went there on a vacation last year :D

Liver
Rattlesnake
I see this list, and all I think is "Ewwww, liver."

Yeah, liver is gross. Of course I only had it a couple of times as a kid so the last time was probably 25-30 years ago. However I can still smell the stench of it frying *shudder*
Grass fed beef liver is very healthy though, and I have a recipe that I am considering where you make burgers with 30% liver and 70% buffalo. I'm considering tweaking the recipe slighly by replacing the liver with buffalo. That should be pretty good.

I forgot about the earthworm cookies they served us in social studies class back in seventh grade.

Bone marrow is pretty common where i'm from. Usually it's cooked in a soup base with whole black peppers, cabbage, and potatoes or yams.

I actually like liver, whether it's chicken or pork.

Liver by itself is disgusting imo. The smell alone makes me feel sick. But here in Bavaria we have a recipe for liver dumpling soup and interestingly, the dumplings don't taste liver-ish at all anymore. It's a pretty yummy dish, in fact.

Hmmm, how about starting a recipe thread? Anyone interested?

Rabbit - like "wild" chicken & was good.

Alligator - decent. Could have been made better.

Lamb's tongue shawarma - tasted good, but felt like it was tasting me back. :p

Abalone - IMO the closest a sea creature can get to tasting like chicken. It was good, but $$$

Ostrich - boring & doesn't taste like beef as some claim.

Mako Shark - amazing! 1st and only time I've had shark + cooked it myself.

Buffalo (ground) - my favorite. Have had it at restaurants, and often cook it at home. Better than beef, less fat and no hormones.

:bolian:

But nothing prepare you to the foul-smelling awesomeness of bagna cauda.
That sounds delicious.

Agreed. I might have to try my hand at making that this weekend.

I am far from a picky eater, but my list is pretty tame compare to some here. I need to get out more!

Kangaroo
Rabbit
Buffalo
Anchovies (deep fried, whole, delicious)
Escargot
Swordfish
Shark fin soup
Moose
Crayfish
Pemmican
Black pudding
Tripe (in Pho)
Haggis

I'm probably forgetting a few things...

Escargots, black pudding and Haggis! You're brave!

Is rabbit really an exotic dish in Canada and California? It's quite common in Europe

Sviđ, nothing beats a lunch that stares back at you.
