Bizarre Foods You've Eaten

I used to have a job site near an exotic meat market at my old job. Anytime I'd visit that site, I'd bring a cooler with me and stop by on the way back.

I got alligator, kangaroo, squab, pheasant, wild boar, antelope, etc. I miss that place.

Btw. I've long thought shrimps are one of the strangest food items on the planet - those tiny legs, the scales, the head full of shit. They are basically disgusting sea insects. (but yes, I do eat them too).
By that definition, a lobster is a big sea cockroach.

Now that's a bad visual...

I haven't tried either crocodile or turtle meat, but as long as they're safe, I would eat them. As for shrimps, yes they're insect-like, but I have no problem eating most mollusks and crustaceans, though I don't care for whole crabs. Too much work.

Actually, lobsters are part of the Crustacean subphylum, while insects like roaches are part of the subphylum Hexapoda. Although both [insects and crustaceans] are considered arthropods. Just a nitpick. ;)

I've had all the Australian suspects as quoted by Miss Chicken. We rarely buy any red meat other than kangaroo. If I could buy emu regularly I would, tastes like very robust turkey.. like turkey and beef had a baby. Have also had..

Withchety grubs, tasted softly nutty

Jellyfish , tasted like the sauce it was in

Trepang (or beche de mer) which is sea cucumber, tastes and feels like a mollusc.

Lots of baby octopus though that isn't exactly bizarre. If I have not tried it I feel compelled to for the most part. The only thing I can honestly say I wouldn't try is huitlacoche.

But even that I might be persuaded to taste, just wouldn't voluntarily order it.

I've had a lot of things that would be considered unusual in Australia given I spent my youth elsewhere. I guess the most "bizarre" food I know I've eaten would be sea turtle and sea turtle eggs when I was young, though where I was it wasn't considered at all bizarre.

I've had a number of fruit and veg that isn't typical of where I live, but I guess the oddest is Betel nut...don't try it, it is terrible. That said it is sad how homogenised our fruit and veg is because I miss things like rambutan, Taro and cassava, which are very, very hard to get a hold of here.

I've had kangaroo before and I'm surprised to see bugs listed as "bizarre". I haven't had Balmain bugs because I live where our bugs are prefaced with "Moreton Bay".

Jono you must not be in a big city? I can buy rambutan and taro easily in Melbourne. Just look around for an asian grocery or a Safeway in a suburb with a high asian population.

I think bugs get listed as bizarre because of the name, LOL. I've never had turtle! I would love to try it.

I incuded Balmain Bugs because I doubt they are sold overseas. We only occasionally get them into supermarkets in Tasmania. I think Tasmanians prefer crayfish.

Are mutton bird sold on the Mainland?

But nothing prepare you to the foul-smelling awesomeness of bagna cauda.
That sounds delicious.

Nothing too bizarre for me.

escargot
clams on the half shell
salmon or tuna sashimi
baby octopus in Japanese noodle dishes
the occasional wild mushroom (picked by someone who knows what they're doing)

That's about it.

I think the most bizarre food I personally have eaten was...liver.
Which isn't bizarre at all. That reminds me, though:

rumaki

I had sea urchin roe (uni) sushi one time. I always saw them using it on Iron Chef and had to try it. It was slimy and pretty nasty.

The one I was amazed by is eel. I've tried that a few times, and it's slightly sweet.

Eel is very delicious. Seal is pretty tasty as well.

Had a chance to try it in Iceland, but it was all sorts of expensive.

I was unimpressed by it here, but I put that down to the shipping and subsequent cooking method used on the poor blighter when he got to Korea. It was turned into a Korean style stew with a deal of hot chilli paste in the broth base that made the taste very hard to discern. It was quite tender and enjoyable, though.

I live in one of the state capitals so I'm probably not looking hard enough. To be fair if I have to go beyond my local shopping centre I do consider it a major expedition.

I don't remember what turtle tasted like at all, but I do remember that I got to sit in its shell and be spun like a merry-go-round.
