A Summer without AC?

Anyone surviving this heatwave without AC? I remember not having it when I was younger and being absolutely miserable in the summer. These days, I cannot imagine a summer without it. Yet there are millions of people across the US (to say nothing of around the world) that are enduring this heat without the benefit of AC.

What's your secret?

I wouldn't do it. I lived without AC for a few summers, and it was the most miserable experience. During the day isn't so bad. It's night time when you're trying to sleep that it sucks the most.

I don't have AC. Granted I live in Denver where the summer months aren't too hot, and there is very little humidity. In a normal year you really only need AC for 6-8 weeks tops, and most of that time strategically placed fans do just fine. This summer though, is horrible. Something like eight of the last eleven days have been over 100 degrees and it gets up to 90 or so in our house. When we moved here in 1971 it was largely unheard of to have AC, but has the years have moved on it's becoming more and more prevelant, driven mostly by people who move here from hotter and wetter climates.

Last summer I barely used the AC. Summer was fairly cool. This year...ugh. Yeah when I did not have AC, sleep was usually an issue.

Cannot relate here in the UK. Despite our Summer there are flood warnings all over the country. Its absolutely messed up. For a bit of AC all ya need to do is board a flight to London. Totally cold. Naturally done too.

We got a bit of today's rain as well -which prompted newspapers to report that "cloudburst" is a word in rising use

I have a big ol' fan I put up if the summer gets hot enough -hasn't yet this year.

Ahhh...but having lived in London myself, when it gets hot there, it can be absolutely miserable since most places don't have AC. I recall that the heat in the tube was enough to make me become a regular bus rider...and I'm not a fan of buses. I remember going shopping in Surrey Quays and being surprised that even the mall did not have AC. Granted it does not do it for very long or often but when it does...watch out. Don't worry London I still love ya like no other

I don't think we've ever a good stretch of warm weather for years...you're right - AC's arn't big here. Pubs with roaring fires is the British experience.

Summer 2005. Its rarely a really LONG stretch. certainly not compared to the US. But I recall having to schlep my belongings from Greenwich to Islington on a particularly warm day. Talk about misery.

Not as hot in Central Europe as in some places of the US, temperatures rarely rise above 90, but with temperatures in the eighties and no air conditioning it is nonetheless fairly warm for my taste.
Regular sport, cold showers and sage tea do the trick for me.

So far, the weather forecast says that it's going to be over 80 for the next few weeks. That's going to suck because my house doesn't have a central AC unit. We rely on opening the windows, blasting the fans and hoping for the best.

I've actually been playing with the AC in my house a bit as an experiment to see how it impacts my energy bill (I don't have it on continously). I can manage a bit with a small desk fan in my room for most of the day, but in the afternoon, the temperature inside my house can reach in excess of 85 F (which immediately causes me to hit the AC to knock it back down to something more tolerable).

The biggest problem isn't the heat, but the notorious St. Louis humidity, which can produce a heat index that makes it feel warmer than it actually is. Right now, it's about 105 F, but thankfully the humidity is low (about 20%), so it only feels about 109 F.
