George and Wionna Kirk didn’t know the sex of their baby...

How is this even possible?

In the scene when Wionna gives birth to Jim, George asked for the sex of the baby. Winona tells him it’s a boy. George acted surprised and replied... A BOY?

I thought that scene was a bit unrealistic even though it made George’s Death more heartbreaking and sad...However this is year 2012 and anytime a couple are expecting a child they always know the sex of the baby by the 2nd trimester.

Heck, pregnant women go shopping for baby stuff before the child's birth. Some of her friends even ask if they should shop for blue or pink cloths which is another way of finding out if the baby is going to be a boy or girl.

May be I am been Paranoid but It was just not realistic that Jim’s parents who live in the 24 centaury with all the advanced medical equipments had no clue if they were having a baby boy or girl.

Fans always said the scene where Spock dumps Kirk on Delta Vega was weak/poor writing from Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman . However writing a story where a couple has no clue of the sex of their baby despite living in year 2233 was far worse.

Probably they chose not to know. Some parents like the surprise.

NAAAAAAAAAAAA....That’s my point.

it is very unrealistic in this day and age for a couple not to know if they are having a boy or a girl.. very very very unrealistic.

Honesty Star Trek 2009 was an excellent film but the more I watch it the more I begin to notice how less than perfect some of the writing is.

It's not unrealistic at all. Of course expecting parents can learn the sex of their baby thanks to medical technology, but when given the option of finding out, many of them still choose not to do so.

It is not unrealistic in this day and age for parents not to know the gender of their baby. They simple choose not to know, they want the suprise.

That's not unrealistic at all. I've had a few friends who chose not to know the sex beforehand, because they liked to be surprised. They bought green or yellow stuff, just in case.

How many people will post and say 1bulma1 is wrong before it's settled? Place your bets here.

Here's some data from 2007 [http://www.gallup.com/poll/28180/americans-want-surprised-sex-their-baby.aspx]:
A recent Gallup Panel poll finds the public roughly divided as to whether or not they would want to know the sex of their baby beforehand.

Here's a story about a registry that caters to people not finding out: http://www.prlog.org/11381629-not-finding-out-on-line-baby-registry-caters-to-parents-not-finding-out-the-gender-of-their-baby.html

The web is replete with anecdotal stories of people not finding out the gender of their baby before birth, including:

So yeah, this aspect of STXI is totally plausible, based on today's world.

May be your rich friends...how many average couples will buy both blue and yellow stuff.

In all honesty I think 80% of couples always find out the sex of their babies before its birth.

not much of a fan of polls

A few year's old, but probably still fairly accurate...

Gallup News Service said:
The June 25-28, 2007, Gallup Panel poll asked Americans to answer a hypothetical question about learning the sex of their child if they "just found out" that they were having a baby. The public is essentially divided in its views -- 51% of Americans say they would wait until the baby is born, while 47% say they would like to know beforehand.

So much for that 80% 1bulma1 was so sure of.

Lets not forget, it happened in the Abramsverse, which means it never really happened at all. ;)

Why is it uneralistic? Of course, the technology would be available, but, maybe they didn't want to know and spoil the surprise. There are people today, who don't want to know.

These two statements don't go together.

What I mean is in year 2012 which is the time we live now present , most couples already know the sex of their baby by the 5 month of the pregancy.

only 51% want to know according to those previous shown statistics, so it's hardly a mandate, it's just barely into "Most"
