What do you miss about TNG?

TNG is comfort TV, similar to something like Friends. The cast have a warm & pleasant on-screen interaction that's very easy to watch. Not many shows do that these days; there's more focus on inter-character tension or complicated ongoing plotlines.

There's a lot to be said for having a warm, fuzzy and satisfied feeling after watching a show.

Yeah, I know the writers were constantly frustrated at the lack of internal conflict among the main characters, but in retrospect I think Gene was right to downplay that for this series.

Not only did it strongly reinforce that "family" feeling, but it really did make the characters seem like they were from a more evolved 24th Century. And it made the show stand out among all the OTHER dramas and scifi shows where the characters constantly bicker and get on each other's nerves.
Yeah, and it wasn't like they didn't have any disagreements in TNG, but they were generally resolved without someone being punched in the face.

Chalk me up as another fan of the character interaction. :bolian: There was such an easy camaraderie between both the characters and the cast members themselves, and that's something that I think the rest of the BermanTrek era never quite managed. No disrespect to the stellar casts of those shows, but only maybe DS9 managed to do things with the ensemble, whereas VOY and ENT felt much more splintered. The TNG cast of characters worked as such a tightly knit unit. :)

Another thing I miss is that TNG was genuniely unique in the landscape of television (sci-fi or otherwise). From the easy interaction between the main characters all the way through to the brightly lit Enterprise interiors (yeah, the beige decor :p), TNG looked and felt like nothing else on television. Where other sci-fi was often dark, both in terms of cinematography as well as in themes, TNG was literally a bright and optimistic world; which is part of what made it stand out from the pack. I thought it was such a shame when Voyager and the TNG movies were so comparitively dark, visually speaking; and that DS9 subverted TNG's universe into something more realistic, but which also lacked much of the natural charm and good feeling that characterised TNG in its prime. :(

It's a pretty basic question but what do you miss the most about TNG? Was it the stories, the characters, the concept, etc?

All of that, plus the fact that it isn't being made anymore.

I'm sick of the darker themed sci-fi we have now. I want to see a return to the bright stuff. Or at least more of a balance.

Picard's wisdom, Worf's epic one liners and Data's never ending quest to become more human.

These.

Ideas.

While so many "contemporary" shows set in space tried to make things more ordinary or more backwards even, STNG had the presence of mind to say: no, there will be some radical changes to technology, sociology, etc, and it will look and feel different. We are now seeing that they may even have erred on the side of caution in this extrapolation!

I miss the hopeful optimism that restores my faith in humanity being able to put aside their petty differences for the most part and build ships like the Enterprise to explore space.

I miss being a toddler when it was still on and every episode seeming amazing and enthralling.

I miss the quality writing, acting, and direction. I watched a few episodes today including Gambit Pt. 1 and hadn't seen any in a while. It was wonderful. I miss it being on every week.

One aspect I find I appreciate quite a bit about TNG, even early TNG, is its anti-militaristic ethos. TNG may be about military officers, but it's about military officers who are committed to peace and nonviolence, and who've renounced militarism. Too much of modern American pop culture is driven by militarism, and TNG's pro-peace message is often missing in modern pop culture.

Good point. On the other hand the early Picard (later he became a bit more casual) seemed pretty stiff for old TOS fans who were used to Kirk. So I'd say that TNG emphasized how important discipline is and that the quasi-military hierarchy is the best way to organize yourselves ... yet also that trust and cooperation matters (Jellico, Picard immediately doing what Geordi tells him after he flies out of the lift in Contagion) and that following orders blindly is unwise (Redemption, Allegiance).
